Himachal sets up SIT to probe student's alleged rape

Shimla, May 20 (IANS): Himachal Pradesh Police on Wednesday set up a special investigating team to probe a college student's allegations of rape and molestation in Dharamsala town.

It also registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and announced a award of Rs.25,000 for providing information about the crime.

"An SIT headed by the inspector general of police (north) has been set up to investigate the case and the additional director general (law and order) would monitor its progress," Director General of Police Sanjay Kumar told reporters here.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and student outfits have alleged that despite the victim's family members asking the college principal to register a case against the accused, no action was taken.
