Excess lead found, food inspectors order recall of Maggi noodles

New Delhi, May 20 (Reuters): Food inspectors have ordered Nestle India to recall a batch of Maggi noodles from shops across the country, saying the product contained dangerous levels of lead. The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) in Uttar Pradesh said high lead content was found during routine tests on two dozen packets of instant noodles, manufactured by Nestle in India.

Two FDA officials said all the packets of instant noodles tested in the state-run laboratory were contaminated. They found a lead concentration of 17.2 parts per million (ppm), which is way beyond the permissible limit. The FDA officials said the acceptable limit of lead ranges between 0.01 ppm and 2.5 ppm.

The scientists also found high levels of added monosodium glutamate (MSG), a taste enhancer, in the noodles.

"Maggi instant noodles contained dangerous amount of lead and MSG. We had to immediately issue orders against the company," D.G. Srivastava, deputy inspector general of the FDA in Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh, told Reuters.

Nestle India, a subsidiary of Swiss-based Nestle SA , said it had strict safety and quality controls in place for all raw materials used to make Maggi noodles.

"We do not add MSG to Maggi Noodles, and glutamate, if present, may come from naturally occurring sources. We are surprised with the content supposedly found in the sample as we monitor the lead content regularly as a part of the regulatory requirements," it said.

A company spokesman confirmed Uttar Pradesh had ordered it to withdraw the batch dating back to March 2014, but added the items concerned had either already been consumed or were beyond the sell-by date, making the recall difficult.

Srivastava said his team collected more than two dozen packs of instant noodles from stores across the state and tested each pack separately before making the findings public.

"Our experts conducted several tests and each time the results were shocking," he told Reuters, adding they had approached federal food inspectors in New Delhi to launch a wider investigation of the noodles.

Nestle Company is often involved in some controversies. Sometimes back it was Hose meat in some of Nestle products abroad.

TV & other media should limit advertising such products. Kids (even grown up people) are attracted watching the ads. of such products.

Its not only Maggi that contains lead or MSG most of the packged food item contains even your favorite chips have it in them. Nowaday most vegetarian/ non vegetarian hotels use MSG which is known in different names.Tasty salt is one of them sold in nilgiris. Many housewifes use it to enhance the taste of cooked stuff.
MSG affects the brain development of young children so also cooking in aluminium vessels. No doubt we have some many with learning disability in the society today.

As for pork being added in noodles it is a myth .Who says maggi noodles is not available in saudi arabia .

Lead is the only heavy metal which does not have an acceptable thresholds to human body. "acceptable limit of lead ranges between 0.01 ppm and 2.5 ppm"... Quite surprising!!!! Monosodium Glutamate [MSG] is not yet banned in very few retrogressive countries like India for reasons best known to the administration! MSG is widely used in road side eateries and fast food outlets without limits.Providing safe food to subjects is not our governments priority. Awareness level is very poor. Enforcement of food safety laws are at pathetic level. Cashew nuts returned by federal administration for DDT level above permissible limits are fit for consumption in Indian markets. Let me quote Bernard Shaw -"Democracy is a system to ensure you always get less than what you deserve"

    India First,

Isnt it ironic that little harmful substance in food is not ok but Alcohol, cigarettes can be bought throughout the country, barring few places.

The other thing, when ever something unwanted substance is found in the products of MNC companies ite blown out of proportion. Take for example, Pesticide content in soft drinks, like coke and pepsi was such a case. I will tell anyone to but check the pesticide level in vegetable, milk and you will be shocked.

The trick used by these companies is that they always claim that they do not add Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) to the product but they process ingredients in such a way that MSG is processed through raw material added to make the product and then they claim "Glutamate if present will come from naturally occurring sources". This is not naturally occurring but made deliberately processed.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a flavor enhancer commonly added to Chinese food, canned vegetables, soups and processed meats. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified MSG as a food ingredient that's "generally recognized as safe," but its use remains controversial. For this reason, when MSG is added to food, the FDA requires that it be listed on the label.

MSG has been used as a food additive for decades. Over the years, the FDA has received many anecdotal reports of adverse reactions to foods containing MSG. These reactions — known as MSG symptom complex — include:

    Headache
    Flushing
    Sweating
    Facial pressure or tightness
    Numbness
tingling or burning in the face, neck and other areas
    Rapid,
    fluttering heartbeats (heart palpitations)
    Chest pain
    Nausea
    Weakness

However, researchers have found no definitive evidence of a link between MSG and these symptoms. Researchers acknowledge, though, that a small percentage of people may have short-term reactions to MSG. Symptoms are usually mild and don't require treatment. The only way to prevent a reaction is to avoid foods containing MSG.

First I have to confess that I am a Maggi fan since its launch in the mid 80's!. What I see today is that this whole episode looks like a corporate espionage!. Just to the imagination of reader's. 1). Why Maggi of a certain lapsed period (March 2014) taken for testing!? when its clearly written that the expiry date is 9 months(exp Nov2014!) from manufacture date!!!. 2). Why the results published now!, a good 6 months after the expiry date!?. 3). What our food inspectors mean by recall of the Mar 2014 batch noodles!?. Do our food inspectors think Indians are eating only use by date foods!?. 4. If a company like Nestle with its sophisticated labs the world over couldnt detect lead, What about Indian manufactured noodles when most of the companies have name sake Labs!!!. 5). Why the food inspectors didnt publish the results earlier and what about current batches of noodles on shelfs!?. 6). Maggi noodles are manufactured at many locations by outsourcing to Indian companies, which location manufactured noodles were the contaminated!?. 7). Whether similar testing done on Indian made noodles!?. 8). Is this testing only for noodles or other food items also included!?.
No answers for all these questions but every one is giving their own free advice!

Maggi noodles are banned in saudi arabia too. The authorities have found out pork gelatin contents in maggi..Nestle India is violating all safety n morale standards to stay in business. V hv given up consuming maggi noodles long time back....i m sure even maggi noodles marketed in india too has pork contents which are against the food habits of muslims...so muslims need to be extra careful when using products that clandestinely has pork ingredients.
