Gurgaon, May 20 (IANS): In a first case of its kind in India, a court here has convicted a man for selling sex selection kits and sentenced him to jail for one year.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs.5,000 on him on Wednesday.

Judicial Magistrate (first class) Varsha Jain on Tuesday convicted Sanjay Khatana under the Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostic Test Act.

The statement from the government said it was an expeditiously tried prosecution case against the menace of sale and marketing of online sex selection kits.

This was the first such case decided under the act in the country.

"It's expected to go a long way in curbing the menace of selective discrimination against women and those involved in exploiting the public," it said.

A case under sections of the Pre-conception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, which carries punishment of three years or a fine of Rs.100,000, or both, was lodged against the accused here on September 2 last year.

Khatana was arrested in an undercover operation conducted by a joint team of the Haryana's health department and food and drug administration. Two sex selection kits were seized from his possession.
