Gurgaon villagers protest RWA objection to cremation

Gurgaon, May 18 (IANS): People from a village here staged a protest on Monday after a residents' welfare association (RWA) objected to the cremation of a man, saying it was spreading pollution in the area.

However, after the intervention of Deputy Commissioner T.L. Satyaprakash, the body was cremated.

The residents of Carterpuri village in Gurgaon protested by keeping the body of 43-year-old Sonarayan on the road near Rezan-La War Memorial Chowk in Palam Vihar area.

The villagers wanted to cremate the body at their ancestral cremation ground in Carterpuri.

Carterpuri village is surrounded by residential sectors of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), whose Residents' Welfare Association (RWA) objected to the cremation, saying it would spread pollution.

"The gate of the cremation ground was locked, as the matter is in court," an official said.

However, a protestor told IANS: "How can anyone stop us from using our ancestral cremation ground? The sectors came into existence a few decades back, but our families have been residing here for centuries."

Deputy Commissioner Satyaprakash reached the spot and allowed the cremation, and assured the people of a permanent solution to the issue.

Daulatpur village in Haryana was renamed Carterpuri to commemorate then US president Jimmy Carter's two-day visit to India in January 1978.
