AAP councillor Nisha Singh allegedly dragged, beaten before arrest

New Delhi, May 18 (NDTV): An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor, Nisha Singh, was allegedly beaten, dragged by the hair and arrested by the police in Gurgaon near Delhi on Saturday.

Nisha, who quit her job in Google to join politics, was arrested in connection with violence during a demolition by the Haryana Urban Development Authority or HUDA on Friday. She was reportedly picked up just after being discharged from a hospital where she was treated for injuries from the clashes between the police and protesters.

The arrest has become controversial with AAP alleging that the police spared senior Congress leaders who were also among the protesters.

Nisha and nine other women have been charged with rioting and attempted murder. AAP sources say Nisha was just filming police action on her mobile and that is why she was attacked.

She was reportedly produced before a magistrate late on Saturday night, before being sent to Bhondsi jail. Nisha, a graduate from the London School of Economics, joined AAP last year.
