Petrol price hiked by Rs 3.13, diesel by Rs 2.71 per litre

New Delhi, May 15 (IANS): Transport fuel prices were hiked effective Friday midnight by Rs.3.13 per litre for petrol and by Rs.2.71 a litre for diesel, including state levies, state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) said on Friday.

The rates were last increased on May 1 by Rs.3.96 per litre for petrol and by Rs.2.37 a litre for diesel.

"Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has decided to effect the price changes midnight of 15th-16th May," IOC said in statement.

According to IOC, it had to hike prices due to volatility in the rupee value and hardening of international motor spirit (MS) and diesel prices in the international market.

"Since the last price change, there has been a steep increase in international prices of both petrol and diesel. Rupee-dollar exchange rate has also depreciated quite significantly during this period," the statement said.

The three state-run OMCs review prices of diesel and petrol every fortnight depending on global oil prices and currency movements.

Petrol price has been market-linked since June 2010, while diesel prices were fully deregulated from Oct 18 2014. Both the fuel prices are revised periodically depending on the international crude oil price.

Currently, the government fully subsidises sensitive products like LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders and kerosene.

Allowing for local taxes, the prices per litre of petrol will be Rs.66.29 in Delhi, Rs.73.76 in Kolkata, Rs.74.12 in Mumbai and Rs.69.45 in Chennai.

After adjusting the upward revision, diesel will cost be Rs.52.28 in Delhi, Rs.56.85 in Kolkata, Rs.59.86 in Mumbai and Rs.55.74 in Chennai.

The crude oil price is measured in US dollars per barrel.

The US dollar performance is currently very strong so the rise in Crude oil.

Why people are blaming Modi here? .

Only solution is to import crude oil from Iran by paying in Indian Rupees but again America not allowing to buy from Iran (embargo on Iran ).

I am amazed of some people who support this price hike just because Modi is in power!. When MMS was in power, international crude prices due to US-Iran-Israel tension were hovering around $140 per barrel and our petrol price per liter was Rs.78!. Modi was lucky that as soon as he assumed power international crude prices started declining due to easing of the above tensions and crude oil price came down(some even now say because of Modi!) to around $44 and our petrol price decreased only upto Rs.64(in Karnataka). That is for more than 60% reduction in international crude prices, we got only around 23% reduction!. Now it has raised to only around $59 per barrel and here its raised by nearly Rs.9 since last two months to nearly Rs.75!. God only knows what our price will be if international crude regains to $140 per barrel!!!. Those talking of rupee devaluation, I want to just say that it is marginally devalued against dollar by Rs.2.00 since Modi came to power!(not to forget the Modi's election promise of bringing down to around Rs.45 per dollar!!!! within 6 months of coming to power!!!)

If congress rule was so good why are there no jobs in India itself? The nation has been ruined by the long rule of almost 60 years by the dynastic congress since 1947. In India people have the habbit of wanting everything from subsidies, as a tax payer i am strictly against all the freebies given in the name of Bhagyas, SC/ST Quota/Minority Quota.. These Quota fellows in our country should work hard and earn money rather then leading thier life with subsidies.

The Prime Minister is indeed moving in the right direction. Just what did the UPA do in power except offering freebies and subsidies? First it forgave the farmers loan, then the food bill and the NREGA. All this made our people lazy and destroyed our economy. The economy was in dire straits when BJP assumed power. More projects have been approved in 1year of NDA rule than in 10 years of Congress rule. Paki intruders too have been taught a lesson. If the economy should move forward then all subsidies must be removed. If one cannot afford then he need not buy. Why should the tax payers money be used to benefit such lazy people ?

Sunil, when media praises Modi, terms like 'stooge' 'paid media' etc conveniently disappear from your vocabulary regardless of ground reality and this time it's unjustified hike in the prices of petrol/diesel. Are you also aware of the fact that our agricultural exports have dropped by 11% for the period Oct - April?. As per your Dr Swamy, unless we boost agricultural exports, there's no way we can thwart the sliding of Rupee against dollar unless of course you have the patience to wait for the Kalachakra turn the fortunes in India's favor.

Geoffry, agricultural system cannot be traditional way as it can't feed 125 crore people with that method . rapid technology Infusion needs to be done In this field so that we can get maximum output with less land . modi will do that In couple of years . all the modi plans will be visible to people in 2017 or 2018 as implementation also requires couple of years . one old party let tell Garibi haTao as their political slogan even after 100 years . who cares? By that time India will move light year's forward

When International crude prices were falling, very little benefit was passed on to public.
Govt increased Taxes to maintain stability of prices.
In the same way, why can't Govt now reduce taxes, when the prices increase to maintain stability of crude price?
How the Govt going to bring down inflation as promised during election?
We will remain dependent on imported crude oil.
Option with us to reduce crude oil dependency is:
Increase Rail network, construct straight Roads, bridges, tunnels, by pass Roads, Dams for irrigation and electricity.
