Delhi government to name scheme after Gajendra Singh

New Delhi, April 25 (IANS): The Delhi government on Saturday said it has decided to name its scheme of providing compensation to farmers whose crop has been destroyed after farmer Gajendra Singh who committed suicide at an AAP rally here recently.

Singh, a farmer from Rajasthan's Dausa district, would also be treated as a "farmer martyr", a government statement added.

The decision came as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal spoke to Singh's brother and "accepted both the demands of the family".

"Delhi government will provide a job to one family member of Gajendra's family, whenever any child will attain the age of 18 years," the statement added.

Kejriwal on Friday said he erred by not stopping his speech at a party rally in the national capital where the Rajasthani farmer killed himself.

The Wednesday suicide sparked national outrage after Singh dramatically hanged himself from a tree at an AAP rally against the land ordinance.

Singh's family had reportedly demanded a "martyr's status" for Gajendra Singh and employment to a member of his family from the Delhi government.
