Muslim Brotherhood leader Badie, 13 others sentenced to death

Cairo, April 11 (IANS): An Egyptian court on Saturday delivered the death sentence to the chief leader of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group, Mohammed Badie, and 13 other members for inciting murder in the case known as "Rabaa operations room."

The Brotherhood spiritual leader and the other 13 defendants are charged with running an operational room to mobilise group members to target security forces and spread disorder after the dispersal of two major sit-ins in the country's capital Cairo in August, 2013, state-run MENA news agency reported.

Meanwhile, 37 other Brotherhood members have received life imprisonment in the same case, the report said, adding that Saturday's verdict can still be appealed.

On March 16, the Giza Criminal Court in Cairo referred the death sentences of Badie and the 13 other defendants to the Grand Mufti, the country's highest Islamic official, whose opinion was usually considered as a formality.

Since the ouster of former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi by the military in July 2013, the army-backed government has launched a massive security crackdown on his supporters, leaving more than 1,000 dead while thousands of others have been arrested.

The government said the protests were violent as dozens of policemen were shot dead during the dispersal process.

Morsi is now standing trial on various charges, including jailbreak, ordering the killing of protesters, spying and insulting the judiciary.

The death penalty is never the answer to controlling more moderate groups like the Muslim Brotherhood, it will only alienate its followers even more and cause them to advocate future violence against the governments and non-islamists. I would like to request that Mohammed Badie and the dozen others' penalty be appealed and turned over, because all they want to do is ensure liberation and territory amongst Muslims, unlike Daesh, Boko Haram and the Taliban, who all simply cause terror and want to tarnish the name of Islam. What is more, the Brotherhood condemned the horrible killing of the Jordanian pilot, which shows that although some of their methods of promoting Islam are quite questionable, they are in general, much more representative of Islam than the likes of Isis and Boko Haram, and the death penalty for the Brotherhood leaders, as well as Mr Badie, should be rescinded as quickly as possible, so that we can call a truce with them, and discuss better ways for them to advocate Islam in the areas that they are active in. Save the death spot for Daesh and other supreme terrorists and dictators because they are the ones who are truly incorrigible. I hope this message comes across nice and clear, as I hope that with the successful appeal against this unjust sentence towards moderate Muslim leaders, we can restore this foggy situation by making peace with the Muslim Brotherhood, and saving the hangman's noose and other stuff for the real terrorists and fellow oppressors, because as I said at the beginning, the death penalty is never the answer to less major crimes like these, and will only cause further enmity between the security forces and the Muslims. Peace and blessings be upon you all, and I hope that Mohammed Badie and his comrades successfully beat this sentence and continue to peacefully promote worldwide Islam, and the jury, please remember to take note of their humanity as well, and soon free them. From a Christian who sympathises with the peaceful Muslims
