India evacuates nationals of 26 countries in Yemen, emerges as hero at global level

New Delhi, Apr 8 (Agencies) : India has helped 232 nationals from 26 countries including the US, France, Italy, Canada and UK from the strife-torn Yemen and emerged as the hero at the global level.

It has also evacuated the nationals of its neighbours Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. While Pakistan had not sought help for the evacuation of its nationals, India during the operation also rescued Pakistani nationals.

On Wednesday, India decided to extend air evacuation from Yemen till Thursday following a rescue request by a group of 140 nurses even as it pulled out another 450 people from the war-ravaged country, taking the total number of evacuees to 4,500.

India had received requests from 26 countries, including the US, Bangladesh and Iraq, for assistance in evacuating their nationals from the strife-torn country.

Operation Sukoon (Hindi, lit. relief) was an operation launched by the Indian Navy to evacuate Indian, Sri Lankan and Nepalese nationals, as well as Lebanese nationals with Indian spouses, from the conflict zone during the 2006 Lebanon War.[1]

The Indian Armed Forces also launched a similar effort, Operation Safe Homecoming, to bring Indian nationals from Libya during the 2011 Libyan civil war.Altogether a total of 2,280 people including 1,764 Indians were evacuated.[5][6] 112 Sri Lankans, 64 Nepalese and seven Lebanese nationals with Indian spouses were also among the evacuees. Citizens of other friendly nations at risk were also evacuated as a courtesy. This was one of the largest evacuation operations conducted by the Indian Navy since World War II.[7]

After the evacuation, the task force remained on station in international waters off Lebanon, monitoring the conflict, and ensuring the safety of remaining Indian nationals in Lebanon. The vessels left for their home ports on 10 August 2006.

evacuation operations have happened, will happen in future too, until these people work in war torn coutnries!..

but difference this time is a MoS level minister, who also happens to be a General, fit as a fiddle, chose to go to the ground zero, stood among the victims, comforted and consoled them, and waited till the last man was evacuated! did this happen ever in history? NO!! people sitting in 10, janpath will comment against for their political reason! why are you getting worked up?

When Modi went to every disaster happened in India, like uttarakhand or Bhuj or Kashmir he officially went there personally, stood there, got his top IAS officers and made them camp there,, networked and made arrangement to see evacuation!.. that is quality disaster management! We are yet to understand that!... We are much more capable than this and with time you will see! Modi is able administrator, porgram manager, project manager, and CEO rolled into one!

Don't ignore our army's day night effort in this operation.

It is give and take kind of operation. It is collective cooperation, that made things possible.

for the safety of indians, amman was choosed as the destination as he forethought that usa may invade iraq for his misadventure.

first understand one thing india was against usa and west in that point of time.

even though india was enemy of pakistan india had excellent relations with saddam.there was no embassies in iraq of any nations during that time except gulf nations under worlds most feared dictator of those times saddam.

that said india had sprawling embasssy in bagdad.

saddam doesn not give his personal visit to any nations dignitaries those times except india.
he was also thinking of taking indian help to devolop nukes.

india was the only nation he trusted those times.thats the reason evacuation of 1 lakh indian person was easy.and it happened before invasion of kuwait by iraq and not like evacuation of indian citizens from yemen in the midst of war.

denzil, first understand the funda.there was no internet facility nor mobile phones to access for indian nationals in iraq in those times toso that embassy can give alert to citizens, most of those who were working as labourers.

evacuation from iraq was difficult as it was vulnerabe to attacks.jordan was choosen as alternate venue.

india is the only nation whose diplomatic relations are excellent in not only one bloc but all the 4 blocs that is western bloc(usa and its allies),eastern bloc(russia, china and its allies, gulf bloc and african bloc.

evacuation from yemen is first of its kind in world history as evacuees have been rescued right from the battleground.

do you know runways in yemen have been destroyed and india is using destructed runways for its flight operation which is right in the center of battleground.

even usa and its allies have panicked to go there and asked thier citizens to board indian ships and airforce planes and asked to contact indian embassy person rajgopal for any problems.that shows indians armys precision skills and modis swift diplomacy with saudi royal family and iran.

You have forgotten late Indira Gandhi leadership. Under her leadership, we won 1971 war, in spite of USA sent its 7 fleet war vessel in support of Pakistan to Indian Ocean. During that period, she was rates as one of the top strong leaders of the World.

So do not compare UPA or Congress leadership to Mr. Modiji. All leaders have their own strengths and weakness too.

Our soldiers facing bullets daily on Indian border, for us Indians, so that we can live peacefully. I salute our soldiers for their sacrifice.

Don't compare Indira Gandhi's leadership to Sonia and Manmohan's UPA please, it's an insult to Indira Gandhi, As far as 1971 war is concerned we can never forget that as we broke Pakistan into 2 pieces, Indira Gandhi was rewarded for that in the 1971 general elections by the people of this country, Unfortunately there is no such personality in Congress leadership today. that's why they have reached this fate
