Kenyan warplanes bomb Al-Shabaab bases in Somalia

Nairobi, April 6 (IANS): Kenyan fighter jets have bombed militant Islamist group al-Shabab's bases in Somalia, military officials said on Monday.

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) spokesman David Obonyo said fighter jets hit two Al-Shabab logistical bases in Gedo region in southern Somalia late Sunday and early Monday.

"KDF hit strike operational camps for al-Shabaab on Sunday and early Monday. The two camps were completely destroyed, but due to weather conditions we have not established the number of casualties involved," Obonyo told Xinhua news agency.

"But we could establish the strikes killed several al-Shabaab fighters," he added.

This is Kenya's first response to an al-Shabab attack on the Garissa University last week which killed 148 people, mostly students.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has vowed to respond to the attack "in the severest way possible".
