Janata Parivar merger done; Lalu dares BJP with ‘Ek Jhanda; Ek Nishan’ slogan

New Delhi, pr 5 (PTI) : The six parties of erstwhile Janata Parivar have merged to form a new socialist entity and a formal announcement will be made by SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, RJD chief Lalu Prasad announced on Sunday after his party put its stamp on the unification to take on BJP juggernaut.

The RJD chief dared BJP president Amit Shah with slogan ‘Ek Jhanda; Ek Nishan’ (One flag, one symbol) in Patna and said other “secular” parties may be invited to join the new entity.

Lashing out at BJP, Prasad said, “I charge that BJP is the cheater of the country. Its organisation is based on cheating. It is a party based on lies.”

Speaking on the merger, Prasad said there “should be no doubts regarding the merger henceforth”. Elections in Bihar are due in November.

“As far as Janata Parivar, the six parties are concerned, their merger has happened and SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav will formally announce it because he has been authorised for it,” Prasad told reporters in Patna.

The RJD chief was speaking to media persons after the daylong national executive meeting of his party got over at a hotel in the state capital.

“Merger means merger. There should be no doubts about it. Only one symbol and not other shall remain because different symbols will create confusion among the public. We will also ask other secular parties to join the new party to combat communalism,” he added.
Over 250 representatives from 21 states, including leaders like Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Abdul Bari Siddiqui, MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, Bihar RJD President Ram Chandra Purve and others were present on the occasion.

While in national capital, JD-U general secretary K C Tyagi said that the decision of Prasad will facilitate the SP chief to take an early decision on it.

“We welcome the decision of Lalu Prasad ji and are confident that the merger will be formalised soon,” he said.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is in the national capital to attend a conference of Chief Justices of High Courts and Chief Ministers, is likely to meet the SP chief.
Sources say that the entire process for merger has been completed and the name of the new party could be announced before the second half of the Budget session, beginning April 20.

Sources had earlier said that the new socialist entity could be named either Samajwadi Janta Dal or Samajwadi Janta Party and Mulayam Singh Yadav, whose SP has the largest number of MPs among the six in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, will be the chairman of the new umbrella entity. They will have a common symbol and a common flag.

Currently each of the six constituents of the erstwhile Janata Parivar has a separate symbol.

The wheel symbol of the erstwhile Janata Dal was frozen in 1999 as the party was split into JD-U led by Sharad Yadav and JD-S under HD Deve Gowda when the former decided to join the then NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpyee. The two parties were then allotted separate symbols.

The party is actively considering the wheel symbol as well as the cycle, which is currently the SP party symbol.

“These are not major issues,” a leader said.

In Parliament, Mulayam could be the leader of the new group in Lok Sabha while Sharad Yadav could be named its leader in Rajya Sabha.

SP has five members in Lok Sabha followed by RJD with four MPs while JD-U, JD(S) and INLD each has two legislators, giving the grouping a total of 15 members in the Lower House.

In Rajya Sabha, too, SP leads the pack with 15 members while JD-U has 12 and INLD, JD(S) and RJD one MP each. Their total number in the Upper House is 30.

Bihar chief minister Kumar was in the national capital ten days ago and had held back-to-back meetings with the Janata Parivar leaders, visiting even Tihar jail to meet INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala.

With their backs to the wall after being trounced in the Lok Sabha polls by the Narendra Modi-led BJP in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, SP, JD-U and RJD began the merger plan.

While Assembly elections are due in Bihar this year end, SP-ruled Uttar Pradesh goes to polls in 2017. BJP has succeeded in making major gains in Lok Sabha polls in these two states.

The merger buzz began soon after Lok Sabha polls and after a series of meetings among the Janata Parivar leaders. The SP chief was formally authorised to work out the broad outlines for the merger at a meeting in December last year.

History repeats! These erstwhile Socialists with varying ideologies came together during the dark days of Emergency with the only objective to defeat Congress. They succeeded with landslide victory in 1977. Once the object of defeating the late Indira Gandhi was achieved, they began pulling apart. Despite best efforts to hold them together by the then younger leaders like George Fernandes and A.B. Vajpayee, the Janata Parivar got split in 1979. Then the 80s and 90s saw number of re-splits and unifications, Janata Dal, Lok Dal, SP, BSP, RJD, JDU, JDS, etc. paving way for its once former ally, the BJP to gain strength. Now notwithstanding the strength gained by the latter, they once again contemplate merger with the same sole objective – to unseat the BJP without any defined national interest. "Desh gaya baad mein, hamein tho bas Bajpa ko harana hai" is their new slogan.

for Bihar election, Lalu adding all this is funny! there is no proper arithmetic that fits in! he will realise when results will come!

UP yadavs voted Modi bigtime, infact ditched Mulayam bigtime, except, in 5 constituency where his own family members fought!

Bihari yadavs know, Lalu is now having alliance with Kurmis, just for his gain! n whenever there is a need to nurture Yadav leadership in Bihar, he brings in Sharad Yadav (from Madhya pradesh) and useless leaders like Pavan Verma (from UP) etc as Rajysabha members and makes Ram kirpal Yadav to run away to BJP! he is self centered.. he and his 9-10 kids and wife and few industrialists as rajysabha members :)

surprise will be MUSLIMs, voting big time to Modi.. they have realised all the seculars games now.. they need job, education and security! congress/Lalu/Nitish gave nothing!
and paswan, and rest dalits are with Modi anyways! projecting SUSHIL MODI as CM, bringing in kejriwal's AAP to cut few Muslim votes, and using congress as spent third force - VICTORY for BJP! vhe vhe vhe,, Amit shah and I think alike here!vhe vhe vhe
