Udupi, Feb 3: The district administration has decided to install meters in auto rickshaws and will soon fix minimum fares, informed deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj while speaking to reporters here on Thursday February 1.

He further said that after meeting the Auto Drivers Union, Consumer Forum and members of the public, the decision was arrived at but the minimum fare has not been fixed yet as there has been no consensus on this issue. The auto drivers demanded Rs 15 as minimum charge whereas others wanted it to be not more than Rs 12.

The DC, however, said that there was no question of raising the minimum fare to Rs 15.

The Union has been asked to submit its proposal by Saturday February 3, failing which the administration will fix the rate after discussions with the Consumer Forum and public.
