AAP 'encouraging theft' by promising freebies like free water: Shiela Dikshit

By Trina Joshi
New Delhi, Feb 19 (IANS): The Aam Admi Party (AAP), which came to power for the second time in Delhi -- with a record 67-seat win this time, is "encouraging theft" by promising people free water and cheap power, Congress leader Sheila Dikshit Thursday said observing that some of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's promises were simply "not achievable".

She also hastened to point out that the Delhi verdict "burst the BJP’s bubble" and presaged far-reaching impact on assembly polls in Bihar and Assam later this year.

Speaking of herself as “somebody who knows administration”, Dikshit, who holds the distinction of being the chief minister of Delhi for three consecutive terms (1998-2013), said “there are things that are just not possible”.

In a comprehensive interview to IANS, the Congress veteran asserted that Chief Minister Kejriwal can’t dole out freebies. “You may promise freebies because you wanted the vote.”

"Now that he is in power, his first priority should be to ensure power to everybody.

“When the government gives power (electricity) to somebody, then they have to pay for it. Otherwise, it will be considered theft. If you (Kejriwal) can make water a fundamental right, then good. But you are encouraging theft,” said Dikshit, giving an example of how people would not use services judiciously if they were not asked to pay for them.

Dismissing any comparison between her and Kejriwal, she said: “I did what I felt was right. His (Kejriwal's) promise of 20,000 litres of water, free WiFi and cheap electricity are not achievable.”

The poll verdict in Delhi that shrunk the BJP to mere three seats in a 70-member house has burst its bubble, leaving it rattled ahead of assembly elections in Bihar and Assam later this year, she added.

“Delhi results have an all-India impact. It’s the political pulse of the nation because it’s the capital of the country. I am sure it (BJP) is shaken now. The bubble has burst.”

Describing the recent attacks on churches as “frightening and depressing”, Dixit said: “I am relieved that the PM (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) spoke on the issue though very late after the damage had been done. The provision of the constitution is being violated... the prime minister has to protect it. That silence was worrying."

She said the “provocative voices - Ghar Wapasi or Love Jihad - had a licence because of the RSS-backed BJP at the Centre”.

Reflecting on what did not work for the BJP in Delhi, she said the party was in “continuous campaign mode" with Swachh Bharat Mission (Clean India campaign) and Make in India push of the prime minister.

“When you (the BJP) talk so much about it, people expect results. And when the results are not felt by the target group (in this case India), then people begin to get impatient. And that’s what happened in Delhi."

With the national opposition, including the Congress, gearing up to unite to mount pressure on the Bharatiya-Janta Party (BJP)-led government in the upcoming budget session starting Monday, Dikshit expounded on the reason why “full” statehood for Delhi was not possible.

Carefully choosing her words, Dikshit called for a “strong political will”, adding: "What Delhi needs is statehood with more power. Full statehood like that of Bihar or Madhya Pradesh is not possible."

"I have the experience and I know what language would work in making such demands. It is not possible because Delhi is the national capital and a union territory.”

On being asked about the Congress's poor performance, the veteran said the chief ministerial face of the party - Ajay Maken - failed to ”impress” people.

“Our campaign was a very sedate one. No vociferous campaign ... without a strong leadership. It’s the acceptability of the candidate and the perception of the voter. Apparently, they were not impressed with Maken. But in electoral politics, it’s not just an individual, it’s a whole collective effort at the grassroots level to the top. The synergy was missing among everybody in the Congress.

“The Congress lost its traditional Muslim vote bank to the AAP because even they got carried away like the others who were the recipients of the freebies Kejriwal was giving out,” she said.

But she agreed that the Congress party needed serious introspection in order to revive its waning fortunes.

In Delhi, the Assembly is just like the Corporation or Muncipality in other states or large cities & the elected MLAs are more like Corporators...& the CM is just like the Mayor, nothing more or nothing less...interiors of Delhi are small villages, just like our grama panchayats!!!

Imagine a large city of 2 Crores population, Capital of this huge country, still fighting elections on Sadak, Paani, Bijli - just speaks of how underdeveloped they are!!!

If water is available in plenty why don't you go and fetch it from river or sea.
Why do you want corporation to provide water to your door step??. Every service being provided should be charged but not over charged. Every cost should be justified for the service being provided.
Similarly, if there is plenty of sunlight and wind why don't you setup your own power generating station at your home?.

Shiela Dikshit Madam's time is over, since she handed over the baton to incumbent AAP.
In their time, so many Bhagya's freebees and reservations given, logically and illogically.
Since these are political issues, which will also be dealt politically.
During their several decades rule some progress made with that, some capitalists, socialists mindset Ministers made billions and widen the gap of haves and haven't s.
So talking less and working more is better for Shiela's Congress or Modi's BJP.

Quote from Deccan Herald July3, 2014:

As many as 31 air conditioners and 25 heaters were among a number of electrical appliances installed in the official bungalow of Sheila Dikshit in Delhi when she was Chief Minister.

An official response to an RTI query said Dikshit's residence on 3-Motilal Nehru Marg, which has now been allotted to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had at least 31 air conditioners, 15 desert coolers, 25 heaters, 16 air purifiers, 12 geysers among others.

An expense of Rs 16.81 lakh was incurred on the electrical renovation of the bungalow that time to customise it according to the needs of then Chief Minister, CPWD said.

Giving the list of appliances and fixtures removed from Dikshit's residence after she moved to Kerala Raj Bhavan as Governor, CPWD has said these equipment were being partially utilised in various government offices as per requirement.

"The remaining air conditioners and fixtures shall be utilised as and when requirement arises," the reply provided to RTI activist Subhash Agrawal said.

Three-term Chief Minister Dikshit had vacated the four-bedroom bungalow constructed in 1920 and spread over 3.5 acres after suffering defeat in the election last year.

    Unquote.

If elected representatives - who have no dearth of money and resources - can have everything free and cheap, why not the common man? After all, we elected you to represent us. Therefore we deserve everything free and cheap, whatever is leftover should have been distributed to you. But you have looted us in the name of democracy. By the way, what about Karnataka government's Re. 1 per kg rice scheme?

AAP promised to the Delhi people about women safety, stop the communal tensions, robbery, Church vandalism etc. But Police dept is under the control of Central govt. They promised about free electricity but Delhi is depending on other states for the electricity. They promised full statehood for Delhi, but that will happened only if the Central govt wish. So this Kujliwala will run away this time also by blaming Central govt for his failure. Same like Modi is blaming previous UPA govt for his failures. We want to see the thamasha in coming days and people from Delhi will suffer a lot.

At the outset I am surprised at Sheila Dikshit statement that freebies offered by AAP are not achievable. What has she achieved in last 15 years other than scams and flyovers. In 15 years corruption grew at the highest level at Delhi and Centre and now BJP is continuing that trend at centre but not at state. AAP is controlled by a team of educated people who have made thorough study of their facilities they are providing to common man in terms of Water Electricity education and over all the prices of essential commodities. Sheila told lies to people of delhi that the discom case in the high court and she can't do anything whereas when AAP came to power in 2013-14 they found otherwise. Her governance was filled with lies, filled with touts at Secretariat, RTO and mafia, liqour smuggling and what not. All these will be wiped out under AAP and the government treasury will be filled with revenue and revenue in a span of 1 year. The CWG scam where Rs. 5,000 worth of Street lights were purchased for Rs. 25,000 will come to light when she is investigated. I think it is time that SD takes complete retirement and stop teaching the common man how to run government, instead the common man will teach her how to run government that too clean governance.
