Delhi polls not a vote on Modi govt: Amit Shah

New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI): Two days ahead of polling in Delhi, BJP chief Amit Shah today contended that the election outcome cannot be a referendum on the functioning of Narendra Modi government.

Dismissing surveys projecting a clear victory for AAP Aadmi Party, he expressed confidence that the BJP will form a government in Delhi with a "very big majority" and Kiran Bedi will become Chief Minister.

His comments are in line with the remarks of Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Delhi polls.

"It is true that it is an election for Chief Ministership. The election in a state cannot be a referendum (about Centre's functioning).

"While this is indeed true that the good work of the Government of India has its impact on elections, a state election cannot become a refrendum (on Centre's functioning) because of that one thing.

"Venkaiahji has not said that. He has said that Delhi election is not to elect a Chief Minister. You also know the Constitution. Elections in Delhi are never to elect Prime Minister," Shah told CNN-IBN.

Holding that the electoral mandate in the national capital cannot be seen as a referendum on the Narendra Modi government, Naidu had told PTI in an interview, "It is an election for Chief Minister and not for Prime Minister."

"Narendra Modi is not fighting assembly elections. It is a state election. You are going to elect a Chief Minister not a Prime Minister. It is the BJP versus the rest. That is all".

Shah dismissed surveys projecting AAP as a winner and ridiculed Arvind Kejriwal accusing him of "trying to become a hero" by releasing its internal surveys to claim a winner.

Shah also dismissed Opposition raising questions over the BJP manifesto not talking about separate statehood for Delhi and said that this issue "should not be linked with with vote bank politics" and a decision on it should be taken through consultations after the poll noise is over.

Amid questions being raised over the projection of Kiran Bedi as BJP's Chief Ministerial choice, the BJP President remained non-committal on whether similar "lateral entry" of faces like Bedi will be experimented in other states including West Bengal.

"There cannot be a definite plan on whether to apply the strategy adopted in a particular state in other states as well because the dynamics and politics of every state are different.

"The political situation in different states is different and keeping that in mind, the party's Parliamentary Board will take a decision," he said.

Asked how important is Delhi for the BJP, he said that every election is important for his party and even elections happening in other states after this are important.

How come not vote on Modi?I tell you what ...only slogan like previous govt of NDA (india shining, feel good factor etc)present NDA govt MODIFIED another serious of slogans JAN DHAN Swatch Bharath etc.See the popular project PM employment guarantee scheme would be scraped by NDA but will revolt against the move.Should fuel price did not plunge I think the WAVES of by now is a history.

Why Delhi hates BJP since 16-17 years? If BJP win this election that would be for a price. If looses, there could be question mark for the style of MODIFIED function.ONE MAN ARMY KEJRI GAVE SLEEPLESS NIGHT TO MODI AND A>SHA IS A GREAT OUTCOME THIS ELECTION.HOPE AAP WILL GARNER 40plus seat.

Delhi’s voters are assumed to be very unpredictable and it was evident in the last Assembly elections when a new-born party AAP captured the imagination of the youth, lower and middle class segments and emerged as the second largest party. The new party even ran the Delhi Government for 49 days with the support of the Congress and maintained its pro-people credentials. The BJP had also improved its previous performance to become the single largest party. The gain of the BJP and the AAP was a result of strong anti-incumbency factor. This time around the incumbency issue is irrelevant and a direct contest is expected between the saffron party and the AAP. Given the grass roots penetration of the AAP and its leader Arvind Kejriwal, who promised not to repeat his past mistakes, has certainly become a formidable force.

Moreover, the AAP had d its candidate much earlier and the move gives the party an edge while connecting with the voters. Modi’s charisma will be put on test with respect to Muslim voters, a strong vote bank of the Congress. Muslims are adrift to the AAP from the Congress and the BJP fundamentalists are only to blame for this. Muslims constitute 11.7 per cent in Delhi. However, a section especially the youth is getting closer to Modi’s development agenda. But, while campaigning in the national Capital some of the BJP MPs, including a Minister, estranged this section even further and the AAP is bound to gain. In ‘Mini India,’ fundamentalism has no place.

Agree that BJP is not in a place of strenght in Delhi which was the case in other states where elections were held & where BJP won.

Entire Congress vote is getting transferred to AAP & the lacklustre Congress campaign is a clear indicator of things to come on the day of polling. In Delhi there is a strong whisper campaign amongst Congress men saying 'Jhadoo par button dabha, kyunki haath to jeetega nahin aur kamal to haar deni hai'...meaning which most of us know

This is the fate of the grand old national party, all of 165 years & which was ruling Delhi for 15 long years until 16th Dec 2013, today Congress is in tatters & I will not be surprised if big names like Ajay Maken & Kiran Walia too bite the dust! In fact getting 4 seats is a difficult scenario for Congress since entire machinery of Congress is openly supporting AAP candidates

Delhi elections outcome would be a strong pointer to both BJP & Congress

Tongue twisting, muddle-headed.He has never ever spoken any truth in his campaign.Worthless creep speaks about his jittery Govt. that tried every possible deceptive methods to shake the one and only upright and rock solid man Arvind Kejriwal.

Mody says his party will win Delhi?!

Amith sha says,Delhi election result is not a referendum or Vote on Modi Govt!!!

How Modi waves evaporated in a such a speed!!Even pressing panic button(Modi extensively involved in election canvas,More than 100 MPs and MLAs brought to Delhi for canvas etc BUT SUSHMA,LK ADVANI and senior leaders of BJP were not seen anywhere.Para landing of Kiran Bedi to bJP Delhi office virtually made big difference!BJP CONCEDES DEFEAT......Finally, BJP may bite dust in Delhi election.

IF AAP wins that is bcoz of disappear of cong. Read what senior leader of cong said on cnnibn'I am very sad that we are staring at yet another rout in just 13 months. The only consolation is the AAP is gaining at our cost, not the BJP," a senior Congress leader said

Beginning of end of modi wave started, because this wave was created by a virtual hype and false media propaganda. The false promises and self obsessed life style of modi are other 2 main reasons for the downfall. Now people do not believe in his speeches because mask is completely exposed . Now onwards every election modi has to face the ire of people for the cheating he has done to them . I do not wonder after 2-3 years he will prove to e liability for the party.
