Centre reviewing condition of northeast rivers: Uma Bharti


Siliguri, Feb 4 (IANS): Intending to utilise the water resources in India's northeast for the country's benefit, the centre has started reviewing the condition of the rivers to find out ways to harness their potential, union minister Uma Bharti said Wednesday.

The water resources minister, who is on a tour of states, said she was discussing the matter with the chief ministers.

Uma Bharti said she discussed various issues pertaining to her ministry with West Bengal Irrigation Minister Rajib Banerjee Tuesday.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi's clear policy is to ensure that political differences do not stand in the way of development.

"The centre wants to utilise the water resources in the northeast for the country's benefit. We have started reviewing the condition of the rivers," she told media persons.

The minister left for Namchi in Sikkim during the day.
