No spare water for any state: Badal

Chandigarh, Feb 4 (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Wednesday said his state did not have any spare water to share with other states, a day after his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar said the state would approach the Supreme Court to seek completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal in neighbouring Punjab.

"Punjab does not have even a single drop of excess water for any other state," Badal told reporters in Mohali near here Wednesday.

Badal said the issue of river water sharing must be resolved through globally accepted Riparian principle and no other formula was acceptable to Punjab.

"The previous Congress government at the centre meted out step-motherly treatment to Punjab by denying its legitimate share of river water. Grave injustice was done to Punjab by denying its share of river water in accordance to the Riparian Law," Badal said.

The Haryana government has been saying that it was firm in getting its share of water from the Ravi and Beas rivers in adjoining Punjab through the SYL canal.
