Petrol price cut by Rs 2.42, diesel by Rs 2.25 a litre

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI): Petrol price was on Tuesday cut by Rs 2.42 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.25 a litre in step with fall in international oil prices.

Petrol in Delhi will cost Rs 56.49 a litre from midnight tonight as compared to Rs 58.91 now. Similarly, diesel will cost Rs 46.01 per litre as against Rs 48.26 at present.

This is the 10th straight reduction in petrol price since August and sixth in diesel since October. Despite reductions, petrol will cost more than ATF, which is of superior quality and used in aircraft.

A litre of jet fuel or aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs Rs 46.51 per litre in Delhi.

New rates of petrol and diesel will be effective midnight, Indian Oil Corp (IOC), the nation's largest fuel retailer, announced here.

After the price cuts, petrol price is the lowest since September 2010 while diesel is cheapest since March 2013.

ATF has a higher octane than petrol and diesel is a heavier fraction in the distillation process. Traditionally, auto fuels being of lesser quality than ATF would cost less.
Four consecutive excise duty hikes since November, totalling Rs 7.75 a litre on petrol and Rs 7.50 on diesel, have however, reversed this.

But for these, the cumulative reduction of Rs 17.11 per litre in petrol price in ten cuts since August and Rs 12.96 a litre on diesel since its deregulation in October, would have been higher.

Petrol and diesel prices were last cut on January 17 by Rs 2.42 and Rs 2.25 a litre respectively.

"Since that price revision, international prices of both petrol and diesel have continued to be on a downtrend and the rupee-US dollar exchange rate has appreciated. The combined impact of both these factors warrant a decrease in retail selling prices of both petrol and diesel," IOC said.

"The movement of prices in international oil market and INR-USD exchange rate shall continue to be closely monitored and developing trends of the market will be reflected in future price changes," IOC said.

The government had last raised the excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 per litre each on January 17. Before this, the tax was hiked by Rs 1.50 a litre each on November 12.

Prior to that excise was hiked by Rs 2.25 per litre on petrol and Re 1 on diesel on December 2 and Rs 2 each on January 2.

Global crude oil prices have fallen almost 50 per cent since June 2014, the most since the 2008 financial crisis, as supplies swelled.

The crude oil that is being processed in refineries is one that was bought about 6-8 weeks back when rates were higher than present prices. By the time, it is processed and marketed its market value would have come down, resulting in inventory losses, totalling about Rs 12,000 crore.

The rate cut by BJP is dismal as compared to oil prices have gone down by 40% since September 2014 till Date. Even it has not reflected in food inflation rate also which is at same level as congress it was in congress time. As BJP is pro Corporate party might be all these benefits have been given to Tatas or Ambanis instead of AAM aadmi. Acche din for Rich and the Richer and not for common man. If oil prive was at US$ 90 per barrel then our current economic situation would have been worse. Thanks to the oil producing countries for the current price cut in the oil.

    1) People telling me Dont write FAKE NAMEs - as if I am standing in election... - They are the ones who support SONIA GANDHI - err.. that is fake name of ANTONIA MAINO... (and as lingappa writes.. little longer)

    2. People want CHEAPER PETROL - These are mostly the ones who live in Middleeast, where petrol is cheaper than their advise to Modi! vhe vhe vhe...

    3. There are people who want Blackmoney in 100 days - These are same people who agree congress couldn't build decent Toilets in India..

    4. People who want 15 lakh rupees in their account by next Jumma - These are the People never trusted BJP, never voted BJP in their life, who hated Rajnath Singh to Advani to Vajpayee to everyone - forget Modi - and they think Rajnath's words are to be taken seriously, when rest who voted for "MODI SARKAR" are happy with his performace!

    5. People who call you "BLIND BHAKT" - they are mostly Muslims - who have no rights to question their practices - those are frozen for last 14 centuries... vhe vhe vhe
    6. And then there are DAIJI SECULARS (yes, wierd, oxymoron) - who dont want an anti conversion law, no unfirm civil code, no Bhagawad geeta as national heritage book - who also believe US/UK/Australia is a CHRISTIAN COUNTRY and beleive, INDIA is secular because Indiramma added that word in 90 sec debate... vhe vhe vhe

In reality it is for the effluents and the political people like RSS, Feku The chaaiwaala to VHP.

Dear Prakash, there is no need to congratulate Modi for price reduction in Petrol/Diesel. This is not his achievement and this is due to reduction in fuel prices in international market. However, still he is busy in appeasing the big shots at the cost of common man. Based on calculation, petrol price should come down to Rs. 35.00. hOWEVER, Modi is busy in returning back big shots for the money they are funding him to win election. It is well said that bjp govt. is of the big shots, by the big shots and for the big shots and he is making common man scape goat. We are being fooled. amit shah is getting billionaire. There is a news that Amit shah has purchased a bungalow each in UK and US and has many company established in India. I am sure he will vanish one day before he is caught red handed. May be he is having secret bank account in swiss back and that is the reason why bjp is hesitating in bringing back black money.

The question is who has signed/allowed an contract to keep the money in swiss?. Don’t judge the Modi rule in few time. We have elected Modi as our PM with pride to change India. This is the only Govt which didn't give the benefit for the people when the crude oil price slashed to 50% instead they hiked the excise duty which was much higher and govt Hiked Thrice without giving benefit for the people. crude oil price was slashed 3 weeks back and oil company didn't reduce price for three weeks and Govt didn't do any thing during UPA time when crude oil price was 120$/ barrel price was 77 Rs now it became 53$/ barrel price is 61 Rs it could have been below 50Rs. Still price is higher ... again if the crude price goes up to 100$ if this is the scenario then petrol price will come to 90Rs/ Liter. If fuel price comes down only other products price will come down...BJP Govt doing nothing for people....but doing well for Reliance and Adani group Well done Sir,

All he did was giving SUBSIDY and making Oil companies lose Money! You dont need major economist to do that!... Even Siddu and Kejriwal are enough to do such economics!.. it is like your father is paying for your petrol and you are just zipping and ripping across streets and thinking it is big and better economics model and wasting fuel!...

Siddu doing same for Rice! he is giving 1 rs rice... years down the line history is written, they will write.. "Siddaramayya neba doreya kaaladalli tala 1 rupayige akki doreutittu".. only other exchequer is paying for it!

Kejriwal is doing the same to electricity.. He gave 300 crores to Anil Ambani's company for power use, so that he reduced bill to half! lol.. it is like, even If I am judicious user, and switch off electricity when not required, BUT I AM STILL PAYING FOR electricity used by a reckless user in other corner of the city.. because, that burden of subsidy is on my head!... guess, this is all too much for you. because already jo ullu hai usko phir se kaun ullu banayega? :D

Dont Mislead the public just like how congress leaders do. Let me give you a statistics,
In 2008 Crude was at $ 145, and Diesel price in India was at 31 rupees. in the same year Crude fell down sharply towards Just $ 32, and UPA govt instead of decreasing the price went on increasing the price towards 33 per ltr for diesel. ( Must salute the daring it showed ), Further in last may Crude was at around $85 still about 40 percent less than its ALLTIME HIGH in 2008, but diesel price in india was at 67 per liter.
Now Google it and search the crude and diesel graph of of last 10 years.. you will get the answer. BLIND SUPPORTER OF corruption party, Dont teach lesson to others.. Burnol is very cheap in india..

Solution is in our hands. If we are serious, the opportunity is to bring down the fuel price to less than 10 rupees per litre (not really the unit price but by drastic reduction of fuel consumption).

Considering the drastic fall in crude oil prices, price of petrol and Diesel should have come down by at least 50 rupees... But, of course, baniya BJP, will not let common man reap the benefits of falling prices of essential commodities and other goods...Afterall, middlemen and traders have to take the lion's share of every kinds of goods and services....if BJP had let Walmart enter into India, Baniya class would have been starving, and BJP don't want baniya class to starve and cut off their black money!

U.S. and Canada's shale gas invention / production has resulted reduced demand, hence crude oil prices falling down.
U.S. seems want to bring down economy of Russia, Saudi and Iran. They are mainly dependents on crude oil prices / production.
Other effect is their bad economy has hit our exports and career prospects.

When in 2008, the crude oil price in International market was around the same as today, the petrol price in India was about 43.5 and Dollar rate was about 50.5. Today, the Dollar is around 61.5 and hence, considering the 7.75 increase in excise, by this Govt, the present rate works out right. But, increase of such a lot of excise is too much, otherwise, price could have been judiciously levied around 50. (figures are in Rs)
