Iraq approves draft of new national guards force

Baghdad, Feb 3 (IANS): The Iraqi cabinet Tuesday approved a draft for the formation of a new national guards force, aimed at recruiting thousands of people to fight against the Islamic State (IS) terror group.

The Council of Ministers voted for the proposed law of the national guards force in its session Tuesday and will send it to parliament to pass it, Xinhua reported citing Iraqiya channel.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Bahaa al-Araji said the proposed law suggests the inclusion of Shia militias currently fighting the IS militants in addition to the recruits from the predominantly Sunni provinces under direct command of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
