Coal mine flooding kills five in China


Beijing, Jan 31 (IANS): Five miners were killed and two others remain trapped in a flooded coal mine in China's Anhui province, local authorities said Saturday.

The accident happened in a shaft of a coal mine in Yongqiao district at 6.55 p.m. Friday when 34 miners were working underground, Xinhua reported.

While twenty-seven miners managed to escape, seven others were trapped, according to Huaibei Mining (Group) Co. Ltd., the owner of the coal mine.

Rescuers have retrieved five bodies and are still searching for the other two trapped miners.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
