India will succeed as long it is not splintered on religious lines: Obama

New Delhi, Jan 27 (PTI): Making a strong pitch for religious tolerance, US President Barack Obama today said every person has the right to practice his faith without any persecution and that India will succeed so long it is not "splintered" on religious lines.

Addressing a Town hall event at the Siri Fort auditorium on the third and final day of his visit to India, Obama also said that America can be India's "best partner".

"Every person has the right to practice his faith without any persecution, fear or discrimination. India will succeed so long it is not splintered on religious lines," Obama told the audience comprising mainly young people.

The President's comments came against the backdrop of the controversy over religious conversions and 'Ghar Wapsi" programmes by right wing Hindu outfits in India.

Obama also cited Article 25 of the Indian Constitution dealing with Freedom of religion.
"Your (Constitution) Article 25 says all people are equally entitled to the freedon of consience and have right to freely profess and practise and propagate religion.

In both our countries, in all countries upholding with freedom of religion is the utmost responsibility of the government but also the responsibility of every person," he said
.
Obama also said that around the world we have seen intolerancce, violence and terror perpetrated by those who profess to be standing for upholding their faith

"We have to guard against any efforts to divide us on sectarian lines or any other thing," he said.
Obama further said that no society is immune by the darkest impulses of man and that more often religion has been used to tap into it.

Obama recounted an incident that occured three years ago in Wisconsin where a man went into a Sikh gurudwara and "in a terrible act of violence" killed six innocent people which included both American and Indians.

"In that moment of shared grief, the two countries reaffirmed the basic truth that we must again today. Every person has a right to practice the faith that they choose and to practice no faith at all and to do so free of persecution, fear or discrimination," he said.

In his speech, attended by young students, scholars and others, Obama said such a proposition holds much importance in India.

"And nowhere it is more important than in India. Nowhere is it going to be more necessary for that foundational value to be upheld," he said.

Underlining the factors that unify both the countries, Obama said "our diversity is our strength" and cautioned that both India and the US have to be on guard against divisive efforts along sectarian lines or any other lines.

"...If we do that well and if America shows itself as example of its diversity and the capacity to live and work together in common effort and common purpose and if India as massive as it is with so much diversity, so many differences, is able to continuously reaffirm its democracy so that is an example for every other country.

That's what makes us world leaders. Not just the size of our economies or the number of weapons we have but our ability to show the way and how we work together," he said.

The US President picked Indian heroes like actor Shah Rukh Khan and sports icons like Milkha Singh and Mary Kom and Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi to make a point that courage and humanitarian values unify both the nations.

"By what Dr King (Martin Luther King Jr) called content of our character rather than the colour of our skin or the manner in which we worship our god. In both our countries, in India and Amercia, our diversity is our strength," he said.

This is what President of USA said in his press conference in the USA sometimes before concerning to to his faith in Christianity.

    HE BECAME CHRISTIAN BY CHOICE.

This is a press conference given by President Barack Hussein Obama

    Copied from the Website:
    Quote:
"I'm a Christian by choice," Obama told his audience here. "My family didn't - frankly, they weren't folks who went to church every week. And my mother was one of the most spiritual people I knew, but she didn't raise me in the church.
"So I came to my Christian faith later in life, and it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead - being my brothers' and sisters' keeper, treating others as they would treat me," he continued.
"And I think also understanding that Jesus Christ dying for my sins spoke to the humility we all have to have as human beings, that we're sinful and we're flawed and we make mistakes, and that we achieve salvation through the grace of God," Obama said. "But what we can do, as flawed as we are, is still see God in other people and do our best to help them find their own grace."
Obama said he seeks to do that through daily prayer and public service. "That's what I strive to do. That's what I pray to do every day," he said. "I think my public service is part of that effort to express my Christian faith."

    Dear KKR, Mangalore,

    Obama spoke about religious freedom.

OBAMA DIDN'T TELL MODI TO EMBRACE THE FAITH OF JESUS NOR YOU ARE A HINDU, AND YOU SHOULD NOT BE A HINDU. HE/OBAMA SAID I QUOTE:

"Every person has the right to practice his faith without any persecution, fear or discrimination. India will succeed so long it is not splintered on religious lines,"

Obama also cited Article 25 of the Indian Constitution dealing with Freedom of religion.

"Your (Constitution) Article 25 says all people are equally entitled to the freedom of conscience and have right to freely profess and practice and propagate religion. unquote.

FINALLY WHEN CHAAIWAALA SAYS HE IS A HINDU WHICH MEANS WAS HE A GHAR VAAPSI TO ISLAM AS OWAISI AND MILAN DXB SAYS EVERY HUMAN BORN IS A MUSLIM.

WHEN CHAAIWAALA IS A HINDU AS HE AND ALL OF THE INDIANS ARE KNOWN WELL THEN WHAT IS THE NECESSITY TO SAY HE IS A HINDU. NOBODY HAVE RAISED QUESTION ABOUT HIS HINDU IDENTITY.

It is not I am writing. It is from the web I quoted what Obama said.
Secondly, The concern of the faith of Barack Hussein Obama is raised in USA, all over the world including in India in the past and in the present.

Favored by the religious freedom Barack Hussein Obama was able to embrace the faith of Jesus and there are many privileged to embrace like Obama did. So he says nobody should be hindered or obstructed from doing so. Hence he spoke about religious freedom.

About his middle name, he was born to a Muslim Father and Christian Mother, so his name.
At the age of 6, he adopted Christianity by choice.
He was active member of Church in U.S. for several years.
He gave clarification about his faith to U.S. press.

However, sometimes I feel it must be really upsetting you to know that in spite of all your efforts there are some who cannot look beyond the prism of religion. These are religious fanatics who view other human beings only by their religion as Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Jew, Parsi, Buddhist, Jain etc.etc.. They are just unable to see others as fellow human beings. However, do not lose heart. One needs to keep persevering for the truth not to be suppressed.

I understand you refer to the US when you say they bombed Non-Christians such as Japanese, Vietnamese, Iraqis, etc. Unfortunately it’s true but note that these bombings were not discriminate rather they were bombed for their political actions and/or unconventional military atrocities. Japan, Iraq or Afghanistan were not attacked for the reason these countries happen to be Non-Christians. For that matter the US and countries like UK and France even fought against Germany & Italy during world war. Today Christians suffer more due to religious persecution in Iraq, Pakistan, Nigeria and Kenya.

Better people and politicians concentrate on economic growth of the nation and upliftment of millions of poor where world is well aware that .If they go in wrong direction it is bad . HAts off to Mr. Obama who has common sense more than enough who is a outsider . Our politicians let be aware of the fact that India will succeed only by secular principles of the great constitution rather than diverting the attention of the people. Patriotism comes only by the religious freedom and speech. Also shame on us because we have to take advise from outsiders. Mr. Obama gave us very good advise which we lack and to be noted. In USA everyone is equal in spite of any religion one belongs . They just look for skills and development of the nation , that's the reason they are on top of the world. Mr. Atul, Mangalore: Thank you for your kind response. Please ask some people like Governor Bobby Jindal,
several movie actors like A.V.M. Rajan-Jayasudha-Nagma-recording artist Anil Kant etc, why did they change their religious faith? Did somebody pay them big amount to change their religion?

You are not going to question that. But, if some poor people are changing their religious faith, then the tone is changed as "forced conversion". Please understand that it doesn't make any difference in their personal fundamental right to change their religious faith. Three ladies worked in our home in Kerala as 'home nurse' became followers of JESUS. They felt our love towards them, and they made their own decision, their families and neighbors are believers in JESUS CHRIST.

Is it forced conversion? I read in a magazine a statement from a person from Orissa they are not concerned with the preaching of the gospel, but educating the low class people and after they are educated, they take away the upper class people's job.

If you are worried like that, please understand that the rich and the poor are the same in front of the Creator, and we will have to take extra care of the poor sectors of the society which is both a spiritual and social responsibility. Again thank you for your kind response.

Mr Obama is very right. India has the potential to become the most powerful economic power but Mr Modi's partners are really a thorn for the crown. What India needs now:
    1. Bring law to have only 2 terms for all elected representatives like the USA. We have only one generation going for ruling, like Gandhis, Yadavs, Jayalalithas etc, as if in India there are no other better leaders than those.
    2. Social Security for citizens, including direct single tax system.
3 Removal of Cast/creed/age/religion column from all forms of applications.
    4. Assess citizens on the basis of economic criteria and not on any other form of unproductive criteria.
    5. Single identification card for all citizens including NRIs without which no government privileges.
    6. Tax holiday years to Industries, who invest in very poor and rural areas at specially created Industrial Zones.
The above developments will no doubt make Modi's vision of Make in India a success. However, Why Modi is silent when his partners make aggressive and threatening statements against minorities, which is a blow to foreign investment. Citizens, think democratically, act secularly for a healthy tomorrow to our next generation. Jai hind....

Mr Abu, I am not working in Saudi Arabia. If Mr OBAMA talks freedom of religion in India, he can also do that in saudi. But I am sure he will not whether or not he goes there for kings funeral or for any other purpose. The reason why i am saying is World leaders are not supposed to show double standards. Forget the expatriates working in Saudi, those who are natives of saudi like Shias who are roughly about 10% of Saudi population are discriminated against. They are not given freedom to celebrate their festivals like ashura. Why no importance to “you to your religion and me to my religion". Not to forget atheists are considered as terrorists. What if India s that it is a Hindu rashtra and does not allow freedom to co religion to celebrate their festivals, not allow to build their places of worship, not allowed to own land etc. it will hurt right?. Right to equality is universal. If there is a forced conversion in India by way of Ghar wapsi, there are laws in India to deal with it. People aggrieved can file complaint.

GOD IS SAME FOR ALL HUMAN KIND WHETHER IN SAUDI OR INDIA OR AMERICA. SO LET THERE BE A FREEDOM TO BELIEVE IN GOD AS PEOPLE CHOOSE. MISSING PART IS FREEDOM TO PRACTICE WITHOUT FEAR, THREAT, ETC. I KNOW MANY IN SAUDI ARE RESTRICTED TO PRAY TO THEIR GOD BUT THE SAME SAUDI'S GOES OTHER PART OF THE WORLD THEY NEED FULL FREEDOM TO PRAY IN OPEN AREAS. THAT IS WAHT OBAMA MEANS OF FREEDOM TO PRACTICE

Mr. Modi's tight lipped attitude has caused greater concern for the world leaders.

The U.N. and the U.S. Congress along with the rest of the world are fully aware of the religious drama playing in India since BJP came into power. If India is expecting greater corporation from the democratic countries of the world in trade and other co-operation, it is an absolute must that there must be total religious freedom in India which is the primary fundamental right of every citizen of a democratic country. With due respect to Mr. Modi, may I tell it openly that he can't ride on two boats at the same time open arms for the foreign investment while the minorities are tormented in pleasing the sister parties of the BJP for political win.

    Mr Mathew,

Religious freedom is one thing and conversion is a whole other game. If someone from outside believing a different religion comes in he is free to practice his belief, which I would like it tell you is what Indians and the Hindus did. It was the Christians who started their conversion that led to this state. Swami Vivekananda and several others pointed to the same about the Christians and the missionary zeal to proselytize.
So don't tell us about being tolerant, teach your kind to stop propagating and converting the poor.

Modi thought it would be better heard\digested by Bhakts|RSS if it was relayed by President Obama as those same Bhakts\RSS may not listen to him hence his "MOUN" on that all these days.
PM (Moun) Modi will be "MOUN" on many things which he cannot deliver.

But, I think, he will do.
At least people are upbeat listening to his hyper speeches\activity. When that happens many troubles\problems are overlooked by people for a period of time until they realise the intention\meaning of those hyper activities. They will realise those were "cover up" tactics for various failures by him\his government.
Even the Nuclear treaty that is concluded was of previous Govt. which was vociferously objected when BJP was in Opposition and now shamelessly begged and concluded.
People will realise also, anything so far done was only the "completion" of works of UPA Govt.
    and nothing of their own.
When that realisation hits the people, then they will think sanely and find out how they have been taken for a ride.
Only thing I am happy about is, I know there is a Government at the centre from their indulging in various not so important matters like Sakshi and other Union Ministers.
Taht is why Modi is on tours to invite H\of States to visit India to deliver what he wants to deliver.

Saudi Arabia is made based on the lines of Islamic tradition and have unified various tribes of Arabian peninsula to one country. there message is simple, if you want religious freedom, u can choose the rest 156 countries of the world to live in,
but India was not based on those lines, as the constitution grants, all people have right to practice, express and propagate there religion !! get it my boy ..

Hats off Mr. Obama, you said it " Perfectly & Rightly " at the Right time in right words. This has to awaken present Govt who is trying to use communal base Politics.
Come on people in authority, wake up and you live your religion and let live other people in their own religion. As long as each of us know we are Proud Indians, who cares what religion do we belong to. Why do you talk so much on religion based politics rather than Good Governance and clean politics. We as a Democratic Nation have every right to Preach, Practice and Propagate our Faith. Does it take American President to come and remind you people who are in Authority this basic right of your citizens. !! What a shame on us.!!

    Obama,
Indeed your views are right but it would have been more acceptable if you had also mentioned a piece of advice to Indian Minorities that they are not supposed to hurt or violate traditions or culture of Majority Hindus as this nation is predominantly belongs to Hindus and their culture!!!
You have said about religious lines, but just want to visualize religious practices of your own Nation US. Your nation is more focused on catholic populations, keep a track on Islam nationals & immigrants, Mexican Intruders, US Population revival strategies and also improvise several other catholic religious practices!!! Now Why is your nation doing so??? It’s because your nation is worried about your predominant religion Christanity!!!
Atleast in India we dont do that, Our past Congress govt has never bothered about Pakistan or Bangladesh intruders niether we Hindus put any compulsions until and unless our traditions are hit.
    As simple as that!!!

Many claim that bieng more than 10,000 years of history still our nation is underdeveloped as compared to US!!! But our Hindusthan was the richest to nation in terms of everything, untill these britishers and other Moghuls invaded India!!!
Bieng 10,000 old nation we have our own traditions and beliefs which has defined India's glory ecstacy!!! This our uniqueness and splendour!!!So why shall we letgo our culture and tradition? Are you guys ready to let go any of your religious sentiments or culture!!!

Mr. Shetty, it seems like you are making your own history of the U.S. while talking about religious liberty in the U.S.

In a secular democratic country like India, if you are trying to give an heavy weight to the prominent religion of the nation, then you have totally lost the logic. India is not a theocracy but a democracy, and the BJP and her sister parties were playing the underground game of transforming India from her democratic setting to a theocracy which was totally a wrong strategy. India can invite the world leaders and give them cordial welcome, but if India is expecting foreign co-operation in investment and trade, India must have total freedom, and the religious freedom is the fundamental and first freedom of every citizen of India.

    SUMMARY OF LOTUS Vs POTUS

    1) despite the step mother treatment in USA , LOTUS head stood like a faithful puppy on the airport tarmac to welcome POTUS.
    2) POTUS's wife had no company as LOTUS head did abandon his wife long time ago.
    3) despite the sheer hatred for father of Nation , LOTUS head had to only take POTUS to the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi .. veer savarkar ? ...ssshhhhhh ....sour grapes My beloved Chaddi friends.
    4) LOTUS head totally whacks republic day by politicizing it by allowing motor mouth KB to occupy front post and also closing doors for the tableau of non-BJP ruled states ... petty politics by LOTUS.
    5) Embarrassing moment when LOTUS pet project - Bullet train - made of cardboard came rolling out in the parade and even more funnier the silly railways minister was so excited seeing the cardboard show .. pathetic !!
    6) As expected , U turn sarkar desperately tried to take credit for the civll Nuclear deal ,but the public ensured they remember who actually owns the credit - UPA ...
    7) India for sale : LOTUS & POTUS heads to round table and hectic negotiations were done to sell India.
    8) POTUS ,much to the disappointment of LOTUS , pointed that many things still needs to be done to increase the Business climate in India ..and make a petty $4 bn Investment promise .
    9) POTUS rubs salt in the wound of LOTUS by taking pot shots on religious fanaticism and its danger to further divide India ..

Now LOTUS supporters are itching to call POTUS as AAPTARD .

Talking of religious harmony was a brilliant master-stroke from President Obama. He hit the nail straight on the (fekus) head.

Hope extremist RSS is listening. If we want to be treated and a first world developed nation, then peaceful co-existence is a basic requirement.

In other words, Obama slapped feku and his band of pseudo-religious henchmen on the last day of his historic visit.

Modi is the only PM in the history of India to have received such a sarcastic humiliation from a visiting guest.

    what a shame!

Two hands are not required to implement article 25 of the Indian Constitution...... It is direct / straight implementation.
Obama has to make efforts to read our constitution and quote the exact article..... He wants his investments to be secured and not to be robbed by street Goondas....

All these years government has come up with polices on the basis of religion . Shadi bhagya for muslims , arogya for hindus , bank loan for Christians etc etc . Any civilized society would find this funny . This type of policy has divided india . policy needs to be on basis of peoples needs not their religion !

Vellano, on a personal level our great Gyaani must've tried to instill this wisdom into his new found buddy, as he claims the chemistry between the two gels pretty well. The trouble is, the latter probably failed to comprehend the Gujarati accented 'Hinglish'.

Mr.President of the United States of America, for this one statement of yours I wish I could come and give you a big, big hug. Thank you very much Sir, from the bottom of my heart !

You have endorsed what I and many other Indians have been saying all along that without true communal harmony in India there can be no real development.

Incredible speech by President Obama, apt and perfect at the time when the VHP is causing nuisance and trouble all over India.Surely a diplomatic nightmare for Modi who had kept his mouth shut when atrocities were constantly inflicted towards minorities and their places of worship.Perhaps the President knows more about Modi and VHP than we know.Modi better shape up or chip off is what it really boils down to,i reckon.

U.S. President Obama's statement implies that, they are aware of the developments taking place in the matter of religions in this country and the same are matter of concern to attract investment in the country and to do business.
Climate for investment is very important decision making factor. U.S. President asserted the same.

Great Speech by Obama much to dislike of Bhakths. What modi could not speak all these days/months ,Obama had to do in few minutes. Obama is well aware of RSS ideology and how they incite communal enmity for their narrow ends. Unfortunately lavish dress style of modi did not make him a statesman

Do you know, this "outsider" was very specially invited by our PM Modi?
Did he invite this outsider only to drink tea and go back?
Modi knows very well, that outsider's words are very important and should be heard\acted upon...
When you are shouting (like a f...) that English is a language of outsider, you yourself learn in, talk with, write in English language. Is it not very "Outsider"
I ask you simply do not make comments without thinking about yourself, how much you yourself involved in it and whether you have anytime tried to do away with that "outsider things" and use desi stuff only for your daily existence.
So many talk about "outsider language" "outsiders dress code" etc. etc. and they themselves very much love all those "outsider" things and go to any extent to avail them!!! Hypocrite\s!!!

Thoughts and words of a wise person and a President.
Hope it has some effect on those who are communal for the sake of creating trouble based on religion.
They should give priority for the Nation they live in, for it's development, integrity and humanity and not splintering the Nation.
Love thy neighbour should be the motto.
