Religion cannot be made cause of conflict: Prez

New Delhi, Jan 25, (PTI): Asserting that religion cannot be made a cause of conflict, President Pranab Mukherjee today said "tolerance" and promotion of goodwill between diverse communities needs to be preserved with "utmost care and vigilance" .

In his address to the nation on the eve of 66th Republic Day, the President quoted Mahatma Gandhi, "religion is a force for unity" and said, "we cannot make it a cause of conflict" as wisdom of India always teaches "unity is strength, dominance is weakness."
He said the Constitution is the holy book of democracy and a "lodestar" for the socio-economic transformation of an India whose civilization has celebrated pluralism, advocated tolerance and promoted goodwill between diverse communities.

"These values, however, need to be preserved with utmost care and vigilance," he said.
The comments of the President came at a time when some right wing parties have been sparking one controversy after another by raising issues like 'ghar wapsi', eulogiusing Nathuram Godse, pressing for having 10 kids for increasing Hindu population and some ministers making inappropriate comments about minorities.

The freedom inherent in democracy sometimes generates an unhappy by-product when political discourse becomes a "competition in hysteria that is abhorrent to our traditional ethos. The violence of the tongue cuts and wounds people's hearts," Mukherjee said.
On the issue of India being termed as a "soft power", he said, "the most powerful example of India's soft power, in an international environment where so many countries are sinking into the morass of theocratic violence, lies in our definition of the relationship between faith and polity.

"We have always reposed our trust in faith-equality where every faith is equal before the law and every culture blends into another to create a positive dynamic," the President said.

Speaking about the menace of terrorism, Mukherjee made a veiled reference about Pakistan saying that the country's "adversaries" will stop at nothing to disrupt India's progress.

The multi-nation conflict has converted boundaries into "bloodlines, and turned terrorism into an industry of evil.

"Terrorism and violence are seeping across our borders. While peace, non-violence and good neighbourly intentions should remain the fundamentals of our foreign policy, we cannot afford to be complacent about adversaries who will stop at nothing to disrupt our progress towards a prosperous and equitable India," he said.

Mukherjee said the country had the strength, confidence and determination to defeat architects of "this war against our people.

"Repeated violations of the ceasefire along the Line of Control and terrorist attacks must get an integrated response through incisive diplomacy and impregnable security mechanisms. The world must join India in fighting the menace of terrorism," he said.

On the economic issue, the President said 2015 is a year of hope and key economic indicators provide for "much optimism".

He said five per cent plus growth rates each in the first two quarter of the current fiscal is "healthy sign for an early reversion to the high growth trajectory of 7-8 per cent.
Highlighting Gandhi's vision, Mukherjee said the call for 'Purna Swaraj' was given under his leadership at Congress conclave in January 26, 1929. He said Gandhi started celebrating January 26, 1930 as Independence Day.

"From then on, the Nation took a pledge on this day every year to carry on the freedom struggle till we attained it," Mukherjee said.

The President said the framework of a Constitution, which was charted in 1950, two years after his martyrdom, that has made India a role model for today's world, was constructed out of Gandhi's philosophy.

He said Constitution's essence lay in four principles: democracy; freedom of faith; gender equality; and an economic upsurge for those trapped in the curse of dire poverty which were made Constitutional obligations.

The country's resolve to eliminate poverty through inclusive development has to be a step in the direction of Gandhi talisman for the country's rulers which said whenever you are in doubt...recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen and ask yourself...will it lead to swaraj for the hungry and spiritually starving millions?, he said.

The President said we must strive for the highest quality in our educational institutions so that we can take our place, within a visible future, among the knowledge leaders of the 21st century.

He also wanted that special stress be laid on the culture of books and reading, which takes knowledge beyond the classroom and frees imagination from stress of the immediate and the utilitarian.

"We must be a creative people, nourished by innumerable, interlinked rivers of ideas," he said.

The youth must lead the way to mastery of technology and communication in a universe where the cloud has become a library without frontiers, and vast opportunity awaits within the computer in your palm. "The 21st century is within India's grasp." the President said.

thanks for repeating golden words of Mr.President himself! ... but you read what you wrote again.. you said "Patriotic chaddies should go to border or die in battle"..! why, you cant go? and is dying the mark of patriotism? why should we have war with coward criminals like Jihadis and bigot army of paksitan?

Dont go back as 1960s to show me muslim martyrs.. there are still muslims in indian army, who are doing great service... and if you go back to 1960s, RSS (the so called cheddies) was part of republic day parade too!... Dont you chaddiless get your knickers in twist to prove something!... "religion is the COnfict of this country and we are facing bigger menace of terrorism because of that"..! lets be ready to agree to it! even Bobby Jindal was forced to say this recently!

Dude where did I say "Patriotic chaddies should go to border or die in battle"
Matter of the fact is Cheddies are Traitors who will be happy to die by orchestrating communal riots and divide this country further and they are very good at it.
According to your own admission Muslims are still part of Indian armed forces.Cheddies were part of republic day in 1960 and after that are they paralyzed?
Why they are not part of successive republic days.

Religion is not the menace of the country. Menace of the country is narrow minded people who provoke the people in the name of religion for their own gain and terrorism is one more provocation. And the best example was Vaidik meeting his half brother recently..

There is no concept of Boundaries, and Nations in this ideology!!.. Islam transcends all boundaries! there is no concept of national flag, national anthem in it!! everything is one big caliphate! and divided as Dar-ul-harb, aman, Dar-e-salam... so a "vande mataram" will be ridiculed, because, there is no concept of "mother and saluting her"!! I have debated this with many muslim scholars and have arrived at conclusion.. and also circumstantial evidences of Mohd Ansari or few of old generation friends who never salute the flag when it is unfurled! Let's debate if you wish... I am nowhere saying they are not Patriots! but symbolism of patriotism is never appreciated in Islam.. am I wrong?

Ismaali, dont take everything on personal level!... here debate is not about me and you, who is lesser patriot!... I clearly told, "old generation and the idea of Islam that was prevalent"... today everyone gets secular education even the kids next to you, if you don't sing national anthem, will mock you!...

this is about people like Hamid ansari, who beat their chest about "secularism and constituion" who refuse to Salute National Flag, like he did today! or refuse to do symbolic aarti/ravan Dahan during Ramaleela in delhi sussehra celebration! he is a bigot... Nobody asks him to wear tilak or those things.. but as Vice President of India, there was precedence of doing it... he refused it this year, because now he knows HE WILL NEVER BE MADE PRESIDENT OF THIS COUNTRY EVER!!! he has his reason/agenda, and President Pranab Da, never realises it!... EVen German football players like Mesut Ozil or Sami Kedira or French Zinedin Zidane refuse to sing national anthem during world cup matches!

And about singing National anthem or not for commoner, it is their wish.. I am no one to force! My country's GDP will not increase if they sing.. finally mehnat counts..!

Vellanna....Yeno president speech baari turike kodta idhe nimge.......
Dont copy subbus ideas and paste it here...come out with your own......
Firstly you should know that your nationalism is based on saffron flag aka bhagwad dhwaj and a feminine form of a hindu God representing nation...This is nationalism according to RSS ...those who doesn't believe in it are traitors this is what sanghis teach ....ours is different form of nationalism .....We love our land that doesn't mean we worship it.....loving is different worshipping it is different....no muslims worship their land but they love it in any part of world .........We dont think vande mataram is a basis to measure nationalism as vande mataram whic is derived from anandmath which praises a certain god and looks nation with perspective of certain religious angle rather than holistic approach of pluralistic India... even sikhs, christians, parsis oppose vande mataram not limited to muslims...we are happy with janaganamana and we are proud to sing it...
Thirdly you must remember howmany sanghis took part in freedom struggle negligible.....So those who pass judjement on patriotism need to look at their past....
Thirdly guruji golwalkar was of opine that manusmriti should had become India's constitution ...We dont have such problem....we dont use saffron flag or green flag for nationalism we use tri color flag to represent nation....Secondly we are happy with India's constitution...better advise for those people who are unhappy with both tricolor flag and India's constitution and dreaming of changing it.. .and then you can teach your lessons on nationalism to us...
    Happy republic day

No one asks you see if it is "mother land or feminine form of god... you may have reservation about today's theme of NAARI SHAKTI also... "! And tell me one who has read Manu smriti or Bhagwad geetha fully here or forced upon reading it!! its you who send kids at early morning to Madrassa just to educate them arabic verses.. Hindus sleep aaram se! And Golwalkar's Hegdewar's cpntribution to freedom struggle, let us not debate! You have hatred for them, just like you hate MODI!... Godhra is all just farcical reason.. WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:

SOVEREIGN means putting the national interest above all else
SOVEREIGN DOES NOT MEAN converting India into an instrument of another’s geo-political strategy.
    SOCIALIST means inclusive growth
SOCIALIST DOES NOT MEAN changing the rules of play to favour the rich.
SECULAR means separation of State and Religion, and equal respect for all religions
SECULAR DOES NOT MEAN engineering communal violence for electoral gain, or making the minorities feel so alienated and insecure that they turn to violence themselves.
DEMOCRATIC means moving forward on a basis of consensus
DEMOCRATIC DOES NOT MEAN seeking constant confrontation with one’s political opponents.
REPUBLIC means the people are supreme
REPUBLIC DOES NOT MEAN that Indians who do not even live in India can decide its destiny.
JUSTICE means social, economic and political equity
JUSTICE DOES NOT MEAN over 31.3 million cases pending in Indian courts and the consequent brutalization of over 2,80,000 unconvinced under trials languishing in Indian jails or the summary justice meted out by ‘khap panchayats’ (village courts.
LIBERTY means the liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship
LIBERTY DOES NOT MEAN the banning of this book, or the censoring of that film, or the rewriting of history, or honour killings, or reconversions, or offering to ‘cure’ homosexuality…
EQUALITY of status and of opportunity means just that
EQUALITY DOES NOT MEAN that the top 10% hold 74% of the country’s total wealth, while the bottom 10% hold just 0.2%
FRATERNITY means assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation
FRATERNITY does not mean blatantly racist attacks on Indian citizens from the North Eastern states, on the streets of the national capital. Let us rediscover the Constitution we gave ourselves 65 years.

"religion is a force for unity" and said, "we cannot make it a cause of conflict"

Religion is a force for unity - yes. religion is a force for unity. but what happens when there are multiple religions that contradict each other. what happens then? the fact is that christians cant reconcile with hindus because they believe that they pagans and need to converted, muslims cant reconcile with christians, hindus or jews because they are considered unbeleivers. hindus dont want to be converted and just want to practice their religion. In addition to this there are thousands of other beliefs that are contradictory to each other. There is bound to be conflict.

we cannot make it a cause of conflict - This statement is nothing but pandering towards religious people to keep them happy in their delusion. humans have to admit that religions provide enough ammunition for them to kill others. Put others in suffering. This has been the case time and time again throughout the human history.

''Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.''

    - Steven Weinberg.

Jeevan…., the point to be noted here is that,

    - The recent increase in open display of political lust & bias in whatever these so called patriotic cultural/socio/religious organisations do/carryout become a subject matter of laugh at least for some if not for all(as we see it is apparent that, even religious heads coming out open in the public & road in the name of socio-religious cause end up seeking political help for the survival of the Sanatan Dharma called Hinduism). Without prejudice, are these organizations giving an impression that the Hindu values of good olden days are gone bankrupt and no longer can take care of itself.

    - The biggest irony is that, in your own response by quoting/bringing Bharatiya Hindu Parishad (If I am not mistaken Pejavar Shri welcomed the formation of BHP), you made an effort to give a political touch(by giving an impression that BHP is Congi proxy). Is it not an invasion of politics in religion…, My be sooner than later I don’t wonder to see one day we may come to know that the umbilical cord of this BHP is Nagpur (may be hatched by the parivar think tank to take advantage & mislead gullible Congi)

Great speech Sir ! Need of the hour especially in the presence of our esteemed foreign guest. Slap on the face of Santa Claus. All his PR naatak has been wasted.

However, dear President due to your speech unfortunately now many Modi Bakhts will accuse you of being a Sickular Congi and a servant of the Italian Waitress.

Good words Mr.President!! But your own Vice President Haim Ansari, seen not saluting the national flag in today's parade - because it is haraam for him!..

Anyway, your thoughts are great! we should PUSH for a UNIFORM CIVIL CODE, STRONG ANTICONVERSION LAW and A VERY STRONG POPULATION CONTROL LAW, irrespective of communities!... I hope you will set the tone for these debates.. thank you! and happy republic day, Mr. President!

Is there any fixed rule if you salute national flag and sing Vande Matharam you will always be Patriotic and rest will be traitors?
In other words if you do these symbolic things then you are a certified patriot lol..

Exactly ...tell this to Mr.President!! there is a religious connotation to every action.... and that is why there is friction between "patriots of all kind"!!! you understood, my point now!

Show your patriotism in action not by drum beating.

Great patriots like Capt. Vikram Batra or Major Sandeep Unnikrishan did not broadcast their patriotism in mass media like your self proclaimed patriots cheddies do.
They showed their patriotism in their action and will live forever in my heart.
That's what I call patriotism not drum beating and walk in the cover of 120 commandos and then claim that ready to die for the country.

    India first,

You are just being silly and out of touch with reality.

You have to fist decide which god is the true one. then you have to provide the evidence for the existence of that god.

If you dont have answer for the above peale dont bother replying for my comment.

It is said that you live your life by thinking this way Mr. Z!

Life is very short to go behind religion.

Speak to the truth, respect all, keep everyone around you happy, spread harmony, and specially as on this day I would like to say be PROUD OF THE COUNTRY you are from.

There is competition in religion and there is no superior religion. We are all the children of ONE GOD.

    Shrunga,

''We are all the children of ONE GOD''

i guess you are a hindu. i may be wrong. Hindus generally say that thing. but the problem is that the other religions especially Abrahamic religions may not agree with that.

I dont believe in god. because first, there is no evidence that the god exist. secondly, i think that idea of a supreme being who listens to your prayers and grants you favours yet lets millions of innocent children die across the world due to famine and diseases is disgusting.

If muslims were really appeased they would have been most developed community in India by now but in contrast condition of muslims is even worst than Sc/st...Appeasement was just a tokenism for one party to get votes and for another party they used to get votes as appeasement was threat to their identity and they used reverse appeasement.....
To get votes these people used backwardness of muslim as a tool to galvanize votes...But in practice they did nothing just lip service....Keeping muslim community backward was the biggest appeasement these political party has done...You can compare the roads, schools and water supply in muslim majority area and other area...you can find the signs of political appeasement there...
