Five die as trucks plough into crowd in China

Beijing, Jan 26 (IANS): At least five people were killed and seven others injured after two trucks ploughed into a crowd in China's Shaanxi province, a media report said.

The accident occurred at around 11.10 a.m. Sunday in Lantian county. The two trucks veered onto the sidewalk, where a group of people were attending a wedding ceremony, Xinhua reported citing a statement from the county's publicity bureau.

The drivers lost control of their vehicles after one failed to overtake the other and they collided, added the statement.

Three people were killed on the spot and two others died later in the hospital. While the others have been discharged from the hospital, three of the injured remain hospitalised.

The drivers have been detained by local police.
