Pakistani militants may attack Odisha on R-Day: Officials

Bhubaneswar, Jan 25 (IANS): Odisha has received intelligence inputs that Pakistani militants may attack the state on Republic Day, officials said Sunday.

"We have sounded a high alert in all districts after receiving intelligence inputs that Pakistani groups are trying to attack the state. We have asked all police superintendents to be on alert, while the coastal security has been strengthened," said Director General of Police Sanjeev Marik.

Security has been beefed up across Odisha as Maoists decided to observe Jan 26 as a 'black day' in five districts, protesting the visit of US President Barack Obama.

Marik said patrolling by security forces has been intensified to prevent any untoward incident.

Maoists had blown up a railway track between Muniguda and Munikhol in Raygada district, about 550 km from here, on the night of Jan 23, leaving a railway official injured.

"We are keeping strict vigil on Maoist activities," said Inspector General of Police Y.S. Jethwa.

He said vehicles were being checked and outsiders verified at strategic locations.
