Five guerrillas killed in Kashmir gunfight


Srinagar, Jan 15 (IANS): Five guerrillas were killed in a gunfight with security forces Thursday in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

The militants were killed in the Gader forest in Keller, a police officer said here.

Acting on a tip, police from Shopian, army personnel from the 44 Rashtriya Rifles and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers launched a search operation in the forest Thursday morning.

During the operation, militants hiding in the forest fired at the joint team, who retaliated. Five militants were killed in the gun battle.

Their identities were being ascertained.

Three AK-series rifles, one SLR rifle and one pistol was recovered from the site. The search operation was still on.
