Suspected terrorists held after Afghan police raid

Kabul, Jan 14 (IANS): A suicide bomber blew himself up and 17 suspects were detained after Afghan security forces launched an operation in the capital Kabul, police said Wednesday morning.

"Following a tip-off, the Afghan National Police (ANP) carried out an operation in eastern Kabul at around 7.00 p.m. Tuesday," Xinhua reported.

After security forces entered the targeted house, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest, killing himself on the spot. The ANP found numerous other suicide jackets and detained 17 suspects, the Kabul police said in a statement.

Further details about the suspects remained yet unknown.

The Taliban insurgent group has intensified attacks over the past couple of months ahead of the Afghan National Security Forces assuming complete responsibility of security from the NATO-led troops earlier this month.

On Tuesday, two civilians were killed and two others wounded in a bomb attack in south-western Kabul.
