Bangladesh violence toll rises to 17

Dhaka, Jan 14 (IANS): The death of four more people Wednesday has taken to 17 the number killed in an opposition-called indefinite blockade demanding fresh elections in Bangladesh.

The four, including a child, were burnt to death in Mithapukur in Rangpur district, Xinhua reported.

They died when opposition activists torched a bus bound for Dhaka with about 40 passengers.

Two people were killed Tuesday when protesters set fire to vehicles at different places.

The blockade has been called by former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the Jamaat-e-Islami to demand fresh parliamentary elections.
