Police officer killed in Afghanistan blast

Kabul, Jan 12 (IANS): A senior police officer was killed and two others were injured when a mine struck their vehicle in southern Afghanistan Monday, Ghulam Jilani Farahi, deputy to the provincial police chief, said.

"Khan Mohammad, the police chief of Mizan district (in Zabul province) was leading clean up operations against Taliban militants when a mine planted by militants on a road struck his vehicle, killing him on the spot this afternoon," Xinhua news agency quoted Farahi as telling reporters.

Two more policemen sustained injuries in the blast, he added.

Khan Mohammad had been appointed one month ago as new police chief of the restive Mizan district, the police official said.

Taliban militants fighting the government to regain power are largely relying on suicide and roadside bombings.
