Finding candidate against Kejriwal proving difficult for BJP

New Delhi, Jan 11 (IANS): Finding the right candidate to take on the AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi assembly polls expected next month appears to be a headache for the BJP's state unit, with senior leaders refusing to let go their "safe seats" and the younger ones not showing much interest in the "tough" contest.

Party sources said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is now also looking at other options, including induction of a prominent candidate from outside the party to contest, or persuading a young office-bearer who has worked extensively in the New Delhi constituency.

"Those who won last time are in no mood to let go of their seats and even other senior leaders who were denied a ticket last time are not too keen to contest against him (Kejriwal)," a party leader from the Delhi BJP told IANS, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The New Delhi seat was a Congress bastion and former chief minister Sheila Dikshit had won it thrice-in-a-row till she was drubbed by the Aam Aadmi Party’s Kejriwal by over 20,000 votes in the Dec 2013 assembly election.

Kejriwal went on to become the Delhi chief minister and, though he was in office for a mere 49 days, he has consolidated his position in the constituency. He is again the AAP candidate for the upcoming elections.

While the AAP has released its complete list of candidates for the 70-member Delhi assembly, the Congress has come out with its first list of 24 names - but is silent on the New Delhi seat. The Congress is also looking for a formidable candidate as Dikshit will not be contesting the polls.

The BJP’s first list is likely to be announced January 18, party sources said.

Some leaders of the BJP state unit are of the view that former IPS officer Kiran Bedi should contest against Kejriwal.

And there are some who think that former AAP legislator Vinod Kumar Binny or former party leader Shazia Ilmi should contest against Kejriwal on the BJP ticket.

"All of them have worked closely with Kejriwal, especially Binny and Ilmi, and they know his strengths and shortcomings," another party leader said.

Bedi was once Kejriwal's ally in the anti-corruption campaign led by Gandhian Anna Hazare that captured the imagination of the country and led to the birth of the AAP.

Binny, who was elected from the Laxmi Nagar assembly constituency as an AAP candidate in the December polls, later rebelled against the party and accused it of not fulfilling the poll promises on water and power.

The AAP expelled him in Jan 2014.

Ilmi quit the party in May 2014 citing "lack of inner party democracy".

Sources said the BJP is also scouting for young leaders who have worked in the constituency.

Among the names doing the rounds is that of Sunil Yadav, who is general secretary of the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) - the BJP's youth wing.

Yadav has held the post of BJP district president in New Delhi.

The name of Nupur Sharma, another BJYM office-bearer, is also doing the rounds.

The BJP emerged as the single largest party in the Delhi assembly by winning 31 seats but could not form a government as it failed to reach the halfway mark.

Delhi has been under President's rule since February 2014 after the Kejriwal-led AAP government stepped down, citing lack of support for an anti-graft bill, among others.

No.1. BJP have enough Talented members, they know very well how to a candidate. Why you have to bother about them?

No.2. Instead of hanging with the help of BJP's tail, use your own brain and try to a Congress candidate who can defeat Kejriwal.

Do you have anyone in Congress ? If yes dare to one?

First time we supported them to have a change in Indian Politics, but they fooled the supporters & ran from administration by failing to understand the trap arranging by dongi Congies. They could not fulfil the promises done by them during election. It s a lesson who ever forget their election promises will be kicked out by voters next time. BJP mind it.

And why I need AAP in delhi? well, simple game! Minorities will ditch Congress big time if he wins this time!.. if he doesnt win here, they will lose faith and will feel he is cutting into only congress's chance!... BECAUSE BIGGER AIM FOR BJP IS BIHAR AND UP!! and he has to field his candidates, to walk away with considerable Muslim votes!! both the states have a large no of muslim voters ! and as seen in Kashmir, they will never vote BJP!... and if AAP loses even this time, even Dubai sheikh's will wary of giving him monies!... if AAP and the combined JANATA DAL SECULAR SAMAJWADI UNITED party fight, there will be triangular contest with BJP and BJP stands a much bigger chance! and Amit Shah is setting his eyes there!... congress anyways is history! and I want Delhi to go AAP way! its not a state, but can be given up, because Home ministry and most of the municipal corps are in BJP's hand anyways!... But, it is like a byelection before next 3 big states of Bihar/UP/Bengal! Seculars should be made happy and some sacrifice is required .. "See I told you MODI WAVE IS WANING"!! vhe vhe vhe

Well, if I was Amit Shah, I will not pit anyone against Kejriwal! ... Even though Binny, Meenaxi Lekhi, Harshawardhan are all there who can win against this hypocrite, i wouldn't give him a chance, where he will lose and will stay out side assembly, doing nothing and Just DHarna!... By Now I know Kejri very well. HE IS ANARCHIST AND LAZY BUM! Never sat and completed any of his work completely/dedicating to the finish..

He was in IRS - a work he left incomplete. He was named "chooha". took study leave and left it. Then he went to NGO life! left the work unfinished. .. he Joined COngress's NAC - advisory council reporting to Sonia Gandhi and Aruna Roy... He was drafting RTI, but fell out with congress (or spun out) and left the work incomplete!... then he joined few more dissatisfied Congi braigade like Papp'us teacher Yogendra Yadav, few Journalists like Sisodia etc and came on the street fighting against CONGRESS!.. but new, it wasn' getting steam. Started using Anna Hazare, Kiran Bedi, Kumar Vishwas, who had a FACE in the public Domain!.. Like Gandhi, Anna too was failure in Satyagraha... Congress like, British never budged. Then CHandaal chaukudi of Chidu, diggy, Salman, SIbal - set a grand game of kicking BJP out and gae him a mandate of a party!.. .. now this gave him a CM seat.. but he left that WORK unfinished too.... he ran to Varanasi.. got humiliating defeat... and trust me ever since there, He has not visited VARANASI even once!.... why strains dont run between Delhi-Varanasi route anymore? .. NO, because he doesnt finish any work , he sets an eye ON!.. he cant stick to a place and do it!..
His basic idea is Dharna and creating chaos in the system! and if he loses, He will be Khulla Saand!.. I want him to win, and Win comfortably!.. Delhi People should give him 36 seats, just about majority and watch the scene from distance! I assure you, he will get fed up in 1 year and will run away...

and my aim, is seeing a AAP government in Delhi..!

LOL... But will Burnol be available..? in Last 3 elections, there is so much usage of it in secular household, that they have also taken itch guard in place of burnol!, or whatever that is available!

See, if you have read my views, I am AGAINST congress! and not AAP ( I hate Kejriwal, yes).. I want AAP to win! it should be alternate force in the country.. but not with same ghisa pita "appeasement, reservation, free booze, water, kambal agenda"..but all inclusive development and jobs and economic agendas!... let them keep BJP in tenterhooks! Kejri is chameleon... but people like Kumar vishwas, Shazia, civil scoiety should come forward!...

so, If BJP comes I am happy anyways.. and if AAP comes, I will never be sad!... congress/communists should never come to power again! thats all...

Yes, if Congress gets 20 seats (or anything in double digit), I WILL ORDER FOR A BURNOL!! :( if I dont get any, I will come to your home to take the old stock. OK, peace now! :D

Shazia LOST!... same way she was pitted against VK singh in Gaziabad, when Kejri is from gaziabad and shazia is from delhi!... all that farce "people will chosse their candidates via referendum" was all bunkum. she took her revenge on the party too, she came up with that sting video, where she says "muslims apna faayda dekhe"!... Kejri got ditched by msulims in that election!.. vhe vhe vhe

That'll truly be an interesting/entertaining contest between a mathematician and an engineer. Have you heard of this old joke?
A mathematician and an engineer are sitting at a table drinking when a very beautiful woman walks in and sits down at the bar.The mathematician sighs. "I'd like to talk to her, but first I have to cover half the distance between where we are and where she is, then half of the distance that remains, then half of that distance, and so on. The series is infinite. There'll always be some finite distance between us." The engineer gets up and starts walking. "Ah, well, I figure I can get close enough for all practical purposes."

    Ismail,
Fully agree with you. Anna Hazare turned out to be an agent for the BJP. I believe the time he went to meet Mamata Banerjee in Bengal was only to get her to support the BJP but it back fired as Mamata the Bengali lady with the sharp brain sensed it quickly and sent Anna packing.
I believe his breaking up with Arvind Kejriwal was also for the same reason as Arvind was unwilling to side with the BJP.
Later he took VK Singh into his group much before VK officially joined the BJP. I believe Anna knew then itself that VK Singh would join the BJP.
Looking back it seems that this whole Anna campaign against corruption was aimed to oust the Congress but more importantly it was meant to bring the BJP to power.
Now it is clear that the BJP had a multi pronged plan of effectively getting a large section of the media on their side, using Anna, using their corporate godfathers, relentlessly stalling parliament proceedings etc. and put their plan into action very, very early which ultimately yielded success.
The Congress found the rug pulled from under their feet all of a sudden. It was too late for them to recover from that.
