New Delhi, Dec 31 (IANS): The 30-year-old doctor who sustained burn injuries after acid was hurled at her at a crowded market here will undergo an eye transplant to save her from complete blindness, hospital authorities said Wednesday.

According to the doctors, a new therapeutic device called "Prokera" is being imported from the US that would help in the repair and healing of the damaged eye surface of the patient.

Amrita Kaur, employed with an Employees State Insurance hospital, was attacked by two motorcycle-borne assailants Dec 23 in west Delhi's Rajouri Garden area. She sustained burn injuries on the right side of her face and eye.

"The patient's eye injury is very grave and her cornea will have to be changed. The imported device will reach by Friday and after that we will perform the eye transplant," Tushar Agarwal, additional professor of Ophthalmology and cornea expert at AIIMS, told IANS.

The transplant will be the second eye surgery to be performed on the patient who suffered 45 percent face burns. The first eye and face surgery was performed Dec 24.

According to the doctors, the eye injury suffered by the patient was of the highest, Grade IV injury.

Agarwal said that the patient's condition was acute.

"We have already performed one facial surgery and seems like we will have to perform another surgery," said Manish Singhal, plastic surgeon treating the facial damages of the patient.

"However, we are waiting for a nod from the opthalmology department so that the facial surgery can be performed after their surgery," Singhal told IANS.
