Sydney siege victims' funeral, memorial held

Sydney, Dec 23 (IANS): The funeral of Sydney cafe siege victim Tori Johnson was held here with hundreds of mourners -- among them survivors of the Lindt Chocolat Cafe siege that shut down central Sydney a week ago -- joining in.

Bright yellow sunflowers were laid on the white coffin of Tori Johnson at his funeral, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

New South Wales Premier Mike Baird and Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione were among the mourners attending the funeral, as was siege survivor Joel Herat.

The 34-year-old cafe manager's funeral was held at St Stephen's Uniting Church, about 100 metres from the scene of the tragedy.

Johnson has been hailed as a hero for his attempt to wrestle the weapon away from gunman Man Haron Monis, who took 17 people hostage in the cafe Dec 15.

Johnson was killed by Monis during the struggle.

A memorial service for Katrina Dawson, a 38-year-old mother of three, was held Tuesday afternoon.

Dawson was among three killed during the cafe siege.
