Two more held for Kolkata hospital lynching

Kolkata, Dec 21 (IANS): Two more people have been arrested in connection with last month's lynching of a man at the NRS Medical College and Hospital here, police said Sunday.

The body of Korpan Shah, 28, suspected of stealing, was recovered from the boys' hostel Nov 16. He was found tied to a pillar and beaten to death with bamboo sticks allegedly by a group of junior doctors and students.

The attackers even allegedly inflicted injuries on the genitals of Shah, who had been mentally unstable following an accident and his mother's death.

While Jasimuddin, a first-year medical student, was arrested Dec 17 for the attack, police arrested two employees of the hostel canteen Saturday night.

"We have arrested Kartik Mandal and Rabi Andia for assaulting the deceased," Joint Commissioner Pallab Kanti Ghosh said.

The incident drew widespread condemnation, with the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights approaching the Calcutta High Court for a probe and compensation for Shah's family.
