AAP collects Rs 91 lakh from Kejriwal's fund-raiser dinner

Mumbai, Nov 28 (PTI): AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal hosted a Rs 20,000 per plate dinner for young professionals, diamond merchants and bankers here kick-starting the party's fund-raising campaign for the Delhi Assembly elections.

"We collected Rs 91 lakh from the fund-raiser dinner last night. Rs 36 lakh were collected from donor passes, Rs 36 lakh was through cheque donation from those who came and our volunteers collected Rs 21 lakh," AAP leader Preeti Sharma Menon told PTI here today.

"The next fundraiser will be in Bengaluru. We are impressed with the response to our fund-raiser drive," she said.

With online donations, AAP is looking to raise funds differently to take on BJP which is relying on 'brand Modi'.

"The Mumbai dinner had space for a maximum of 200 donors, mostly our supporters. Most of those who attended were young professionals, some diamond merchants and a few directors from Bollywood," she said.

AAP's Maharashtra unit has a target of raising Rs 5 crore over the next two months through reach-out drives," she said.

In the run-up to this year's Lok Sabha elections, Kejriwal had in March hosted a fund-raising dinner in Bengaluru inviting criticism from Congress which questioned whether the AAP leader — who then also charged Rs 20,000 per person for having a meal with him — could claim to represent the common man.

"Kejriwal has appealed people to donate for the party," Menon said. To encourage donations, AAP is tweeting online donors' names with the hashtag #IFundHonestPolitics.

After the Delhi Assembly elections in December 2013, the party has so far received donations from over a lakh donors. The maximum money has come from Maharashtra, followed by Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

AAP is the creation of BJP. Post Yeddy and Reddy drama in karnataka, it realized, there is least it could do to attack congress on corruption. It needed an alternative to woo the people, the only alternative was to put togethor a social activist cell, known for their credentials.

Kejriwal who worked closely with UPA on RTI bill, knew of NAC chaired by Sonia bringing up Lokpal bill next.

A team was formed Kejriwal, Shanti Bhusan - former BJP minister, Justice Hegde - Son of BJP founder, Ramdev,Kiren Bedi, Anna Hazare etc. People did not notice them initially however then suddenly RSS activists and Media jumped into action. UPA was cornered and the leaked CAG report became an ammunition to the opposition and BJP. Entire country united against corruption.

UPA invited Anna Team for Lokpal negotiation and did mostly not exactly what they wanted. However, Anna Team was not satisfied. Kejriwal took the opportunity and broke ranks. That was a huge shock for BJP.

Suddenly, the Lokpal bill looked okey for Anna Team and the bill passed in the parliment. It is to be noted Kiren Bedi publicly said the leader of opposition Arun Jaitley too have endorsed the new bill. That implied, only after getting his okey, Anna Team welcomed the bill.

Kejriwal - AAP factor created ripples in BJP, as people overwhelmingly supported him. RSS cadre's did not know what to do.
Delhi election further, made them nervous. It was then, Kejriwal made a strategic mistake, he ran away from the job, fully aware he can not ful-fill the promises.

BJP actors got swang into action and rest is history. Modi with his oratory, engaged the crowd and won the election decisively.

There are people still beliving in Kejriwal. This dinner proves that point. But, it is the congress vote he is going to eat, to give BJP win in a platter.

Overview is wrongly described here. As you mentioned "Kejriwal took the opportunity and broke ranks" - why because there was a need and also now there is a need to curb corruption by majority of the people. How Anna such a old person can run Anti crusade movement. We require dynamic and HONEST leader, this is the feature of AK, that no one has.

Anna Hazare movement was a social movement, not political, when started. Kejriwal broke ranks from social to change it to political. Maybe he realized it is a cover for political ambitions of BJP, whatever the reason. But it is a fact that he broke ranks with the original movement.
