Aizawl, Nov 26 (IANS): The Mizoram government would undertaken all efforts to achieve 100 percent literacy in the north-eastern state, a minister said Wednesday.

"According to the 2011 census, the literacy rate of Mizoram stood at 91.33 percent making it the third most literate state in the country after Kerala (94 percent) and Lakshadweep (91.85)," School Education Minister H. Rohluna said in the state assembly.

"With the appointment of animators and coordinating with NGOs, and involving church teachers in remote areas, the efforts to achieve 100 percent literacy would be made successful. Village councils are also being engaged in these endeavours," he added.

"The maximum literacy rate was attained by Serchhip district at 97.91 percent while the lowest literacy rate was recorded in Lawngtlai district at 65.88 percent."

The minister said that of the eight districts in the state, the literacy rate in three districts - Lawngtlai (65.88 percent), Mamit (84.93 percent) and Lunglei (88.86 percent) - are lower than the other districts.

Among the eight north-eastern states, the literacy rate was the highest in Mizoram, according to the last Census in 2011. The national literacy rate, according to the 2011 Census, is 74.04 percent.
