Govt may withdraw LPG subsidy for rich

New Delhi, Nov 22 (PTI): The government is considering doing away with the LPG subsidy for the well-off, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said on Friday.

“The next important decision India will have to take is whether people like me...(are) entitled to get our LPG subsidy,” he said at the HT Leadership Summit here.

“I think the sooner we are able to take these decisions as to who is entitled to these subsidies, of course some people would be, the better it would be for our system. These decisions are all on our agenda,” he added.

Currently, 12 cylinders are available to consumers at a subsidised rate of Rs 414 each (in Delhi). Any requirement beyond this will have to be purchased at the market price of Rs 880 per 14.2-kg cylinder.

Jaitley said: “Once political leadership, particularly the man on the top, has decisiveness, the most complicated of the decisions will also become simple. One does not have to wait for years to decide on coal blocks or what to do with spectrum or natural resources, or with diesel pricing or with gas pricing.” Some of these decisions had been complicated over the years, but the new government wasted no time and simply took a call on them he said, adding that “I think that’s the agenda we continue to follow”.

Jaitley further said that India is at a crucial stage “where we must not exhaust our patience” as global investors are looking at India with renewed interest.

A good move to improve the national financial health. Hope a scientific way is devised to find out who actually need subsidy on LPG and even otherwise. There are enough ppl enjoying subsidy and reservation who actually should not be and vice versa of that is also true. Coming to LPG, for the consumers who will not get subsidised cylinders should not be left to the mercy of gas companies either. I for one, would like to be able to buy a cylinder off the shelf with no hassles about prior booking, stock issues, KYC and other problems I have to go through time to time. Govt should ensure that LPG is available to such customers as like any other consumer goods say Petrol, Ration, Vegetables or fruits. People regardless poor, middle class, rich or super rich people buy items in the department stores without even looking at price tags. I am sure that they would even buy the 12 cylinders without any subsidy.

Now Middle Class(forgotten after election for next 5 years)will pay Ambani the Subsidies to hire One more Helicopter or Aeroplane for next 5 years.
Gas Audit will bring out the profits raked in by Oil Companies which again are compensated by governments doubling their Bonus Earnings at the expense of common citizen.
Kejriwal has time & again shown governments & Ambanis play a game with hand in glove method.

IDENTIFY WHO SPEND FOR NECESSITIES WITH MINIMUM/LESS NO OF CYLINDERS EVEN IF THEY ELIGIBLE FOR 12NOS AND VICEVERSA. ACCORDINGLY CLASSIFY WHO ARE POOR / RICH AT YOUR FINGERTIPS.
THAT STEP CAN ENCOURAGE TO USE ONLY FOR NECESSITIES.

In our country rich people are:
Salaied employees,LIC agents.retired persons who are living with FD interest,Pensioners, etc.,
    Poor class are:property dealers,Contractors,Advocates,business people,transport operators,Indistrials, etc.,
    Mera Bharat mahan hai na......
Therefore first non subsidised LPGs should implemented to the above mentioned first category of bechare citizens.

Gas is back bone of every livelywood. It does not make any difference whether he is rich or Poor. Are you giving any concession on Income tax if he is rich. Then why no subsidy. He is rich because of his hard work. And he is paying his tax. Why dont you stop all the benifits given to the Political members (MP, MLA, MLC). Almost all the members been given free gas, telephone services to him and his family. Almost all the politicians are rich and well paid. They are capable to pay everything. Dont give anything free to them.

how are rich decided? Yes, Subsidies are killing the govt. but, why "STOP" subsidies by any law or rule? it shoudl be voluntary! ...agree for a rich person it wont matter if he spends 5K extra per year... but then, he also pays Higher taxes, just cos he earns more... Govt. shouldn't force anything on him, just cos he has worled hard to be rich...! Let it be voulnatary.. Many have shunned this subsidiy, with their own call, after Modi requested them!..lets be fair to them too...

infact remember, once upon a time, Indians, gae all their gold to the Indian government, when we were fighting china war! so they know how to be good citizens, if dire needs are there.. :)

All gave gold to govt? Honestly, I'm hearing such patriotism in the post independence era for the first time. Hope this aint no bs. Whatever may be the case, the current lot of the rich and the mighty of our country is kinda proactive in this regard. They have their wealth safe in overseas banks even if their motherland goes bankrupt due to war or whatever reasons.
