'Hindi and Urdu are two eyes of India'

Aligarh, Nov 19 (IANS): Hindi and Urdu are like the two eyes of India, and noon should play politics over them, leading writers in the two languages said here Wednesday.

Shambhu Nath Tiwari of the department of Hindi at the Aligarh Muslim University said Hindi and Urdu were both born in India and were equally popular among the masses.

He said both were incomplete without each other. Hindi films cannot be imagined without Urdu.

Hindi and Urdu are so mixed up that their separation would kill them, warned Abdul Bismillah, a senior writer, critic and former chairman of the Hindi department of Jamia Milia Islamia in New Delhi.

All of them were addressing a seminar on "Hindi-Urdu ka Aapsi Rishta - Kitne Door, Kitne Paas" (Inter Relationship of Hindi and Urdu - Distances and Closeness) organised by the Jamia Urdu Aligarh.

He pointed out that politics should not be played with languages. Hindi and Urdu were like the two eyes of India, he added.

Earlier, Farhat Ali Khan of Jamia Urdu Aligarh said the present era belonged to globalisation and computers.

He said there was a dire need to include modern technical words in Hindi and Urdu.

Khan also emphasized the importance of translation of Hindi literature into Urdu and vice versa and said this would help bring unity and communal harmony in the society.

Humayun Murad said that "easy and communicable words" were used in Hindi and Urdu so that they remained the language of the masses.
