Two more arrested in Assam for jihadi activities

Guwahati, Nov 19 (IANS): Two close aides of Burdwan blast accused Shahnur Alom have been arrested for their involvement in jihadi activities in Assam, police said Wednesday.

Shahnur, however, managed to give police the slip.

Police have been on the lookout for Shahnur, one of the 12 accused in the Oct 1 Burdwan blast since last month. His wife Sujina Begum was nabbed from Guwahati recently and is being interrogated by police's Special Operation Unit as well as the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Based on a tip, police launched a search operation in Fakirganj in Dhubri district Tuesday night, police said.

Two youths - Abdul Noor and Shahnur Islam - were arrested for their involvement with Shahnur and in jihadi activities. Shahnur, who was taking shelter in the area, escaped.

Police said the Border Security Force (BSF), which guards the Bangladesh border in Dhubri district, has been alerted so that Shahnur is not able to escape to Bangladesh.

With the arrest of the two people, Assam Police have so far arrested 11 people since last month for their involvement in jihadi activities in the state.
