President, PM pay tribute to Indira Gandhi


New Delhi, Nov 19 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday paid tributes to late prime minister Indira Gandhi on her 97th birth anniversary.

Mukherjee and Ansari joined Congress president Sonia Gandhi, party vice president Rahul Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh in paying floral tributes to Indira Gandhi at her Shakti Sthal memorial here.

Modi tweeted from his official account from Fiji: "I join my fellow countrymen and women in remembering our former prime minister Indira Gandhi on her birth anniversary. My tributes."

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani and other parliamentarians paid floral tributes to Indira Gandhi in parliament earlier in the day.

Indira Gandhi, born Nov 19, 1917, was India's first woman prime minister. She was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards Oct 31, 1984.
