Man, woman held with gold in Bengal


Kolkata, Nov 19 (IANS): Two people including a woman were arrested and gold worth over Rs.71 lakh seized near the Bangladesh border in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, the Border Security Force (BSF) said Wednesday.

The arrests and the seizure of about 2.698 kilograms of gold were made Tuesday night near two different border outposts - Bithari and Pipli - during special operations by the BSF troopers.

In the first operation, a man was arrested from Bithari and 12 gold biscuits, weighing 1399.62 grams and with an approximate value of Rs.36,34,813, were seized from him.

In another operation, a 40-year-old woman was arrested and seven gold biscuits weighing 1298.47 grams with a value of Rs.34,74,056, were recovered from her.

Both the accused and the seized gold were handed over to the local police.
