Delhi Police honours city's bravehearts

New Delhi, Nov 18 (IANS): Delhi Police Tuesday presented awards to 30 people for helping the force in averting crime and nabbing criminals in the national capital.

"Those who helped us were all from different backgrounds, but they came together and joined hands in catching the criminals. This shows the true spirit of true citizens," Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi said after awarding them with certificates of appreciation and mementos at the India Habitat Centre.

He added: "The 85,000-strong Delhi Police force is not sufficient to ensure security to 1.8 crore people. It can only be possible when such bravehearts come together and support us in averting crime."

Bassi said he was thankful to all the 30 people, who included six women.

Gurmeet Kaur, a 25-year-old resident of west Delhi's Tilak Nagar area told IANS how she successfully chased two motorcycle-borne youth who had snatched her chain.

"I noted the bike's registration number and immediately informed the police. Meanwhile, I started chasing them in an auto-rickshaw until I got stuck at an intersection. There, a man on a scooter offered help and I finally managed to nab one of the snatchers," she said.

The snatcher who was caught by Kaur, was accused in fifteen cases of robbery.

Bhim Raj, a Delhi Transport Corporation driver, who foiled a robbery by driving the bus, which had been boarded by criminals, to the police station, said: "People should not be scared of fighting criminals. Only our efforts can ensure a crime-free society."

With regard to the increase in domestic violence against women, Bassi said: "We often note that the girls who belong to the economically weaker sections become victims of sexual assault by people residing within the house."

"The residents should start self-defence training programmes for girls in their localities to prevent such crimes," he added.

Special Commissioner of Police Deepak Mishra told IANS: "Honouring the people was initiated by the south-western range, but it will be soon extended to other ranges as well."

Delhi has six police ranges.
