Petrol, diesel prices hiked by Rs 1.50 a litre

New Delhi, Nov 13 (PTI) : Petrol and diesel prices were on Thursday hiked by Rs 1.50 a litre after the government raised excise duty on the two fuel to mop up an additional revenue of about Rs. 13,000 crore.

The fall in international oil prices had resulted in six consecutive reduction in petrol prices since August and two in diesel in the last one month and there was possibility of another round of cuts this weekend.

But the possible reduction has now been negated as the the government decided to raise excise duty to shore up its revenue.

Excise duty on normal or unbranded petrol was hiked from Rs 1.20 per litre to Rs 2.70 per litre and unbranded diesel from Rs 1.46 a litre to Rs 2.96, a government notification said.

The same on branded petrol was raised from Rs 2.35 a litre to Rs 3.85 and on branded diesel from Rs 3.75 to Rs 5.25 per litre.

While the excise duty hike will result in an immediate increase in both petrol and diesel prices, the expected reduction would keep the retail rates at almost the same levels.

There is also a possibility of state—owned oil firms preponing the planned review of fuel prices due on Saturday to make the whole exercise price neutral for consumers.

Before the duty hike, petrol cost Rs 64.25 a litre in Delhi and diesel Rs 53.35 a litre.

While the fall in global rates and the resultant cuts in retail prices had led to loss of revenue to the exchquer, particularly, for state governments, there wasnt any loss to the Central government on account of reduction in petrol and diesel prices as excise duty on the two fuel is fixed and not ad valorem.

Unbranded petrol currently attracts a basic excise duty of Rs 1.20 per litre, a special additional excise duty of Rs 6 a litre and a road cess of Rs 2 per litre. Unbranded diesel attracts a basis excise duty of Rs 1.46 a litre and road cess of Rs 2 per litre.

The total excise duty on unbranded petrol will rise from Rs 9.20 to Rs 10.70 per litre and than on unbranded diesel from Rs 3.46 to Rs 4.96 per litre.

Branded petrol currently attracts an excise duty of Rs 10.35 per litre which would go up to Rs 11.85 per litre and that on branded diesel from Rs 5.75 to Rs 7.25 per litre.

I read comments in some other news papers, the BJP followers were cheering that the oil price came down because Mr. Modi became the PM of India. Since some of the BJP followers are giving such an undue credit to Mr. Modi, Mr. Modi should take the steps to supply petroleum at the lowest price possible to the consumers as the crude oil price is plunging.

Government earn more than 60% from each litre of petrol sold in India by way of custom duties, taxes, cess etc. Earlier, government as was giving back some of these amount as ‘subsidy’ to refineries as their cost, taxes, transport and dealer commission together were more than the govt controlled selling price. So the steady increase in selling price of diesel and petrol in the last fews years of UPA benefitted the central and state government. Though the blame went to UPA, the real benefit of increased income will befall on NDA.

Now that the world crude price has come down by 30% and still decreasing, the present govt don’t want to pass the benefit to ordinary citizens. See what they have done.

Petrol price was reduced by 3 rupees last time, when in fact there was more than 5 rupees reduction in international price. So where the 2 rupee gone. It was passed to Oil refineries! Their margin is increased from around 2 rupees to more than 4 rupees now. Those companies were already making around 30 paisa nett profit before (Reliance made 20K crores profit last year). Now they will earn more than 2 rupees from each litre of petrol sold. This is around 7 fold increase in net profit and will run into tens of thousands of crores ( Read the allegation that BJP spent more than 10,000 crores for elections along with it. Now things would be very clear for rational thinkers).

Oil price has come down heavily in the last fortnight, another price cut was on the way. Now, instead of passing the benefit to consumers, govt has increased the taxes. This could have done last time itself instead of benefit passing benefit to Refiners (Reliance & Essar will benefit the most).

Instead of taxing the petrol & diesel in percentage, central and state govt should charge a fixed amount per litre, so that the govt revenue is depended on ever changing crude prices. And govt should make everything transparent and inform the citizens too.

Total number of registered motor vehicles on Indian roads had reached 160 million(16 crore)in 2012.
By Now it would be at least 17 crores.
Other machines like pumps using fuel not counted.
On an conservative average consumption of 1 Liter per day, multiply by this Rs.1.5 increase, Rs.25,50,00,000/- will go to the Refinery's KIT.
Just multiply aforesaid figure by 365 days and see the profit refineries will make per day.
This way, Electricity Power distributors and mobile service providers make money!
    Bigger the population, more money.
The movement all these SECTORS were privatized RELIANCE made entry and slowly capturing entire market. They only have to handle politicians.

In international market the Crude oil price has not gone up. It is still decreasing. In India, the price rise is due to "government raised excise duty on the two fuel to mop up an additional revenue of about Rs. 13,000 crore". Either you have not read the above news item or your IQ is limited.

Sir, it is my pleasure to reply to you. The gas price vary from state to state based on the state tax imposed. If my information is correct, the Federal Government impose a flat tax of 18 cents or more/gl which is used by the Department of Transportation. Besides, every state has their own special sales tax on petroleum. Some States like California, the price is very high due to the very high tax imposed.

In our local stations, the gas price was plummeted from $ 3.20 to 2.51/gl (American gl is 3.78liter-British 4.54/ liters)regular unleaded during the last three months. The States of Georgia and Tenn have far less gas price than other States. In different cities of the same State, the gas price will vary a few cents higher and lower. Now, all over the mainland U.S., the gas price regular unleaded is around $ 3.00, in Hawai it may be higher.

    Shivappa,

I agree with some of your points. Things are improving slightly on all the fronts that you mentioned.
But what amazes me is the dual nature of the followers of both congress and BJP. Some of your were extremely critical of UPA in each an every matter, and that was required as well. I think we need to continue our critical analysis with NDA as well. Or else we will do the same mistake that we did with congress for 60 years. Most of us thought that crongress can do no wrong and we were fooled. Lets not allow history to repeat with NDA. Let's continue our critical analysis on all aspects. In the end, even with all the good intentions that Modi might have, finally most of the politicians at the ground level share the same DNA as their predecessors from congress. The lust for power/money is so intense in our system that it will take years for things to get back to normal.

I am into business in mlore. From where i see, at the grassroot level there is very little that has changed to impact my day to day life. The only visible benefit that i have seen in the last 4 months is the surge of stock prices which benefited me directly. And of course there has been some reduction in fuel prices and some commodity prices. Rest of things are as it is when UPA was in power. I know we need to give modi more time. Perhaps 2-3 more years before we can see more visible impact in our daily lives.

This is my observation and hope you take this positively to understand that ground reality from my perspective.

    Mohammed Hanif
your views are taken with positive intent.
there are 'die hard' supporters on both sides. Though I support BJP, I do not hate Congress (CONgress as fondly referred by me sometimes) and I do not (or would not like to) always support whatever BJP does. I reserve my right to criticize BJP when they are wrong.
Perhaps, the reason why some of my friends here are misled, is because of the number of my comments supporting BJP in comparison to criticizing it and in any case outnumbering the adverse comments made on congress than appreciating it.
I am not against anybody criticizing BJP or Modi, IF there is a valid reason. If there is a valid reason I would like to support them (by pressing 'like' or at least by not commenting against) I wish the staunch supporters on both sides become little more practical in their approach while commenting.
At this stage, it is too early to expect a miracle out of BJP govt whether Modi promised something or otherwise.
Sir, as you rightly said even if Modi has good intentions, to get it translated in to action the babus and netas must be honest in their approach. Hope this culture will change some day, before us in our life time.
Like you I have also benefited from the rise in stock index. But, it is only notional. I haven't sold anything and the so called profit (or benefit) is still on paper.
Being in Mangalore, we might cross each other one day. What do you say?

Still the progress / achievement is not satisfactory for some of you.
You know very well Ismail, that people with vested interests are trying to sabotage the investigation of black money, by putting undue pressure on the Govt to release the names of the account holders without investigation so that future lists will be withheld by those countries party to the bilateral treaties. or you don't want to acknowledge industrial production is higher today than 4 years ago during UPA regime?

you can have your views and beliefs, who is forcing you to believe even when the things are in black and white?

International Crude oil price have come down to the lowest level yesterday. After BJP came to power Crude oil have come down by 25 dollars a barrel. But Petrol price have come down by Just Rs 5. In reality Petrol price should have been Rs 50 at current crude oil prices. But Modi Sarkar is swallowing Rs 20 per liter and filling their pocket.

    KRPrabhu,
this 13,000cr is expected to benefit the states (which includes our nidde bhagya sarkar) not the central government.
moreover the hike in tax and the possible reduction is expected to offset each other and there will be no change in prices.
at least CONgress bhaktas have realised that price of fuel India is now linked to international prices.
Hopefully they will not Modi tomorrow if due to international crude price hike there is an increase in prices of fuel in India
But, I have no hope of them that they will ever improve

Signs of Acche din. The crude proces have gone down to $80 per barrel. Yesterday it still went down an all time low. but today government of India announces Rs1.50 hike in both diesel and petrol.
    this government is another UPA3.
People voted Congress out just for that.
But his government is not doing anything good to the people.
Earlier only manmohan sing was silent all others used to speak.
But now only Modi is talking all other ministers except mrs smriti is in the news.
