Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Nov 5: Four persons were charred to death and 54 injured when lightning struck a fireworks unit and triggered a massive fire that gutted a godown near Sivakasi, the country's fireworks hub.

Around 200 employees were stacking bundles of fireworks in the godown at remote Singampatti village, in neighbouring Virudhunagar District, late yesterday when the tragedy occurred, police said on Sunday.

The entire godown was destroyed as the blaze, aided by strong wind, swept through the godown. The crackers exploded for almost three hours.

The deceased included two women.

DRO S Nandhagopal and DSP Ganeshaperumal visited the site for an on the spot enquiry. A case had been registered.
