Kiss of Love protest in Delhi, 70 detained

New Delhi, Nov 8 (IANS): As a gawking crowd watched, scores of activists Saturday locked lips in the midst of a busy Delhi street to protest moral policing and support the Kiss of Love movement in Kerala. At least 70 protesting students were detained but were let off within half an hour, police said.

The protesters, including many women, mainly from Left-leaning student organisations, gathered outside the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) office near Jhandewalan Metro station in central Delhi in the afternoon.

As a few hundred curious onlookers gathered around them, a few of the protesters locked lips. The activists also formed a human chain on the road and blocked traffic.

As word spread of the 'Kiss of Love' protest, some Hindu groups arrived at the spot holding banners that said "Pyar karna theek hai, par sanskriti ke khilaf jana theek nahin hai" (It is alright to love, but one should not go against Indian culture).

The banner had a picture of a kissing couple with a large cross across it.

Soon a scuffle broke out between the protesters and right-wing supporters.

The Hindu groups accused the Kiss of Love organisers of going against Indian culture.

The All India Students' Association (AISA), Students Federation of India (SFI) and the All India Students' Federation (AISF) were the student groups participating in the protest.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the youth wing of the RSS, condemned the Kiss of Love protest.

Blaming the Left-leaning organisations involved in Saturday's protest, the ABVP in a statement said: "All the Communists walked the streets of Delhi to kiss (actually smooch) each other publicly with the intention of corrupting young minds and to indulge in immoral activities. Next time, they might sleep together on the roads to fulfil their fantasies.

"Shame on such organisations and individuals who think of themselves as moral police and are forcing their version of Western morality on common people," the statement added.

Photographs of the Kiss of Love protest went viral on social networking websites. The Facebook page of the Kiss of Love campaign had registered over one lakh likes up to 7.30 p.m.

The Kiss of Love protest first started in Kochi last week as a symbolic resistance to the rising moral policing in the state. A similar protest was organised in Kolkata Friday.

Those who are protesting are the ones who are indirectly trying to encourage immoral activities to spread in the society. Let kissing/hugging be your personal way of life and should be in the privacy. Students do not be influenced by movies and western way of life. Maintain value of Indian culture and the morals what our elders teach us. If you cross the limit of freedom then you will face the consequence. I do not think majority of Indians would tolerate such nuisance. We already have enough problems and do not invent new fields to spoil our young generation.

It takes time for different societies to embrace 'modernization'. Even in the west, it was an orthodox society. As time passed by, they changed.
In India too kissing in public would be acceptable, but not at this point of time. So you cant thrust this on to majority. do it in private, for the time being.

In the coming years, we might change accordingly who knows, a quick intercourse between strangers in bus stations, airport lounges or railway waiting rooms would be common and acceptable.

Fools might call it 'modernization' but i would still refer it to be 'loss of moral values'.

How we feel if we see our sisters & daughters kissing some sadakchaps publicly in the name of protest !! Kiss is symbol of pure love !! If we allow these sick minded protesters today, tomorrow same people will do public sex in the name of protest !! Our Father of nation Mahathma Gandhi thought us how to do protest and demand.... this is absolutely sick !! Unfortunately few people are happily supporting because protest is against RSS !!

Hinduism and Indian ancient culture was free and tolerant for such activities...kiss or no kiss. It was so as sculptured in temples openly for people during those times and can be still seen in ruins of temples. It all got changes when Arabs invaded and brought their culture of covered and closed ones and along with them followed by westerns who preached their followers its sin as per ....* to have fun* in their preachings .....!

If you can do it in private what is wrong to do it public.? Because these so called protectors of culture are not allowing people to do it in privately, now these people have to do it in public.
Culture should be protected by creating awareness and not by force.

It's natural that when something is freely available we don't have curiocity, but when something is baned people Wil have more curiosity to have it more.

Only awareness will protect our culture and not the forceful implementation by these idiot organisations.

    Dear reader's,

But only tolerant Mangloreans will be protesting against Moral policing by' Shuting the mouths'.

That is the only reason Moral police don't see any end in Undivided Canara.

The banner had a picture of a kissing couple with a large cross across it. Why give a religious colour to this protest? Were they all Christians or was it initiated by Christians? It is very unfair to bring in religious symbol of a peace loving community to a protest which gives the impression that Christians are responsible for this protest.

My apologies for posting the comments. I misunderstood the cross. I took the NO sign cross for the Holy Cross. I wish to withdraw my earlier comment on this subject.
