Urdu being promoted in Mauritius


Aligarh, Nov 5 (IANS): Urdu is being promoted in Mauritius, and the country now boasts of more than 13,000 teachers.

This was stated here by Shehzad Abdulla Ahmed, president of the Urdu Speaking Union of Mauritius.

Languages do not have religion, Ahmed said here Tuesday at a seminar on Urdu's popularity and its global status.

Anwar Dustmohammed, secretary of Urdu Speaking Union of Mauritius, said Urdu should not be linked with one particular religion.

Presiding over the seminar, Farhatulla Khan, Professor Emeritus of the Aligarh Muslim University, said the positive role of Urdu language in India's freedom struggle was well documented.
