Protesters clash with police in Srinagar

Srinagar, Nov 4 (IANS): Angry protesters clashed with police in Nowgam area of Srinagar Tuesday following the death of two local youths in army firing in Chattergam village of Badgam district Monday.

Protesters came on the roads in Nowgam pelting stones at the police this morning.

"Police exercised maximum restraint while dealing with the angry protesters," a senior police officer told IANS here, adding that the situation was "under control".

The Army said a Maruti car carrying four persons had jumped mobile vehicle check posts (MVCPs) set up to trace guerrillas following which the soldiers fired at them.

Two youths, identified as Faisal Yusuf Bhat and Mehrajuddin Dar, died in the incident while the other two were critically wounded.

The army has regretted the loss of lives and ordered an enquiry assuring that those found responsible would be severely punished.
