Information can't be disclosed outside specific proceedings: Swiss govt

NEW DELHI/BERNE, Oct 31 (PTI): Amid a debate on disclosure of names of suspected black money holders, Switzerland on Thursday said information exchanged under Swiss-India tax treaty cannot be disclosed "in principle" to a court or any other body outside the proceedings of a 'specific and relevant' case.

The comments come at a time when a Supreme Court-monitored Special Investigation Team is probing alleged stashing of black money by Indians aboard, including Swiss banks.

Switzerland, long accused of being a safe haven for illicit funds, has promised to extend assistance to India and reply to requests for information in a "time-bound" manner on cases of alleged tax evasion and financial crimes, or provide a reason if no information can be shared.

Explaining the treaty provisions about disclosure of such 'secret' information, a Swiss finance ministry spokesperson told PTI from Berne that authorities from the two countries are having "regular contacts on bilateral tax matters" but refused to comment on particular cases.

My dear countrymen/women and in particularly commentators of DW stop dreaming about getting a share of the black money stacked in foreign countries. If you really care join hands and fight out corruption at every level starting with yourself. Change begins with self. It is easier to point a finger at the other, but hard to point a finger at your own self and rectify one's own attitudes and behaviour. Let's be gentle women/men. Lets save our country and build a bright future for our future generation.

Christine, Mangalore, you are forgetting the fact that our present day rulers in Delhi are where they are, because of the big lie/promise that they would get this money back. Are you suggesting it's incorrect to hold them accountable for this mammoth lie?

No Geoffery, I am not suggesting that, I only say lets begin the change that we want with self. I support anti corruption movement from the persons who are not corrupt themselves."Let the one who has not sinned cast the first stone" theory, lets practice.

Modi government has to take do or die drastic steps to curb the bribe menace irrespective of caste, country and party. If the same situation continued there is no better future to India and our next generations have to suffer in respect of food, shelter, education, medical etc. etc.

Since I am living in India's financial capital, Mumbai, I hear the stories of bribe, black money and such things as a routine practice everyday. But, in Times of India, yesterday, I read something, that has astonished me. They say, the building passing department babus get Rs: 1200 per sq ft as a normal bribe, which no builder has disagreed. I just give an example.: Near Mumbai, Lodha's Palace city is coming up with 1, 2 and 3 BHK flats. 50,000 flats are proposed and if you take average 800 Sq ft each flat, the amount of bribe runs into whopping 4800 crores. Believe or not, it is reality. Then see our entire nation, how much black money is circulated and created !

Back in 2009, just few days before LS elections some BJP supporters were distributing handouts to morning joggers/walkers at Kadri Park, explaining how BJP, if came to power would bring back lakhs of Crores of Rupees hoarded in Swiss banks. All the numbers were there in black and white on those leaflets, I too was given a leaflet which I crumpled and threw into a nearby dustbin uttering loudly ‘bull$#it’. A fierce argument ensued. Told them ‘either you guys have no clue as to how the secretive Swiss banking system functions, or knowingly you are trying a take the gullible for a ride, even if the Swiss banks reveal the list of account holders, the govt will not make it public as it involves names of king makers regardless of party in power. If any party dare does it, that’ll be the last day in power for that party’. Honestly, this time around, I believed that AAP was an exception to this.

as per the wikileaks report, major politicians and businessmen money is not in swiss banks but in some banks in germany which the govtstill did not get list from them.

if the govt give amnesty which prev govt gave to 100 people and dont disclose all data and bank statements to public, this will be just another futile exercise.

    good day,thanks.

Black money is not a creation of the BJP. Actually this NDA Govt is making an honest approach to understand & get back this money back to India. THis is something which the Congress could not do for 10 long years?

As far as you are concerned, why are you restless& Spewing venom on this portal? You're sitting so far away, earning valuable dirhams for you to lead comfortable lives, please do...

But in India, put your nation first& do respect the law

BJP successfully propagated black money is money related to corruption, arms/drug/human trafficking etc. This is congress money and mainly is of Gandhis. People believed them.

In reality all these are criminal offenses, friendly countries voluntarily provide information, given there is some evidence is provided to the respective country.

BJP had to show some evidence related to corruption whether it was in bofors, and now in all the scams it accused congress. BJP claimed they have a mountain of evidence. Everyday nirmala sitaraman used to show a piece of paper and claim as evidence.

It seems they were all cooked up evidences, to falsely accuse congress. There is no other explanation.

As per Yesterday's media report and interview with Chairman Justice Shah of SIT, out of 627 names, about 300 are NRIs. NRIs, if they keep the money in Switzerland or Swaziland, Income Tax authorities have no right to question, they say, since it is legal. Hence, NRI account holders will not be scrutinized. And out of 627 names, 289 accounts have Zero balance now. According to Media, some 7 to 8 thousand crores may be recoverable.
