Filipino peacekeepers from Liberia to be quarantined

Manila, Oct 29 (IANS): Filipino peacekeepers who will return from Liberia in November because of the Ebola virus threat will be quarantined at a military camp in Tarlac province, a senior military officer said Wednesday.

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Gregorio Catapang said the 112-man contingent will be isolated for 21 days at a peacekeeping operations centre (PKOC) in Camp O'Donnel in Capas town, Tarlac, Xinhua reported.

He said the contingent will arrive in the country Nov 10 due to the threat of the Ebola virus that has claimed thousands of lives in West Africa.

Gen. Catapang added that the peacekeepers from Liberia will receive medical checkups at PKOC.

PKOC chief Roberto Ancan, who is constantly in touch with the peacekeepers in Liberia, said there was no report of any of the peacekeepers infected with the Ebola virus.

As of today, they are doing well," the official said.

AFP public affairs office chief Harold Cabunoc said military medical teams will be supervising the quarantining of the peacekeepers.
