Situated on the Bendore road is the first Multi Detector Computerised Tomography (MDCT) Angiogram which has been launched recently by the Mangalore Heart Scan Foundation.

Speaking to press persons here on Wednesday, Dr K Mukund chief cardiologist said that the facility has been launched for the first time in the State at Mangalore at the newly established state of the art diagnostic Centre - Mangalore Heart Scan Foundation.


The 64 slice MDCT Scanner is considered a wonder machine and is introduced by a world leader in medical technology- Siemens. The machine is capable of completing Angiography of the heart under 8 seconds with stunning accuracy, he said.

Through the 64 slice CT scanner advanced tests like cardiac coronary angiography can be done in seconds. The procedure is painless and there is no need for admission or anesthesia. There is also no blood loss, while carrying out these tests, unlike in the Cath Lab (Conventional Angiography).

The scanner is capable of performing Angiography of any other organ of the body like brain, liver, kidney, abdomen, chest etc.  In short the machine is capable of taking pictures of the heart with such precision and quality that the health of a person's heart can be revealed in seconds. The machine is also helpful in detecting changes in the body very early and is of immense help in trauma cases.

According to senior Cardiologist Dr H Prabhakar, men above 35 and women after 40 with any one of the risk factors like high cholesterol, smoking, stress, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, family history of heart disease, erratic life style, long working hours, stress etc., are vulnerable to heart attack and should undergo MDCT Angiography to detect and prevent heart attacks.

MDCT Angiography is the test of choice for patients following CABG and Angioplasty to ascertain the patency of the grafts and stents.

Mangalore Heartscan Foundation with centralized air-conditioned centre and is also equipped for other specialized tests - Echo Doppler computerized Tread Mill test, Computerised laboratory, so as to provide all the necessary investigation under one roof.  The centre provides the state of the art diagnostic facility which is ultimate in the field of diagnostic cardiology.


All Angiographies are done by Senior Cardiologists and their specialised opinion is provided to the patients any time. The type of out patient set up is unique and is the first in Karnataka. Unlike other CT scanners this Cardiac MDCT machine is also capable of detecting minute growth or abnormalities and as a result is capable of detecting cancer at a very early stage. 

Dr K Mukund, eminent cardiologist of Omega Hospital is a pioneer in introducing the modern cardiac facility, Angioplasty/CABG to Mangalore.  Dr Mukund is also instrumental in the introduction of this cardiac MDCT Angiogram (Scanner) to Mangalore. 

Eminent and senior Cardiologist Dr H Prabhakar, Dr Poonja, consultant radiologists Dr Naveenchandra Shetty and Dr Devdas were also present at press conference.
