MANGALORE, Oct 19: Even as FM (frequency modulation) radio is gaining in popularity across the country, it is also bringing in tremendous competition, Prasar Bharati chairman M.V. Kamath has said. Prasar Bharati has been doing reasonably well to compete in the market, according to him.

Kamath, who distributed prizes to winners of various Hindi competitions organised for Akashvani employees for Hindi Week here on Wednesday, advised radio announcers and anchors to speak slowly so that the listeners could understand them.

Referring to role of community radio, especially in western countries, Kamath said they played an important role in facilitating discussion on issues of local importance.

Such issues may not get the time or the space on national broadcasts, he said and stressed the need to develop community radio. Earlier, Kamath held informal discussions with the staff members on various issues.
