Major earthquake hits El Salvador: USGS

Beijing, Oct 14 (IANS): An earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale jolted the Pacific region off the coast of El Salvador and Nicaragua, killing at least one person, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The quake struck 67 km west-southwest of Jiquilillo off the coast of El Salvador and Nicaragua at 0352 GMT Tuesday, the USGS said, adding that it hit at a depth of 40 km.

El Salvador's emergency services urged people living near the coast to move inland after placing a tsunami alert in effect, Xinhua reported.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for coasts located within 300 km of the epicenter.
