Modi wades into cheering crowds, throws security in a tizzy

New York, Sep 27 (IANS): Wearing a smart burgundy bandgala and dark trousers, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi plunged into a large throng of madly cheering crowd of fans here Friday evening here, throwing his security detail into a tizzy, as he arrived at his New York hotel from the airport.

Several hundred people had gathered outside the hotel to cheer Modi as he arrived in a large motorcade.

Almost impulsively responding to their welcome chants of "Modi" "Modi" and placards greeting him with different messages outside his hotel, the Indian prime minister waded into the crowd and left the security officials, both Indian and American, scurrying after him.

Stepping out of his car, Modi happily mingled and being among them is an unusual gesture by a visiting VIP in a high-security city.

Modi's disregard for security was in contrast to New York City's security consciousness. It has hunkered down this week as more than 140 prime ministers, presidents and royalty descended on the city for the annual UN General Assembly meeting.

Vast stretches of Manhattan around the UN building and elsewhere have been cordoned off and access severely limited.

Several federal and city security forces, some in battle gear, patrol key areas or staff checkpoints. Behind the UN building, Coast Guard boats have taken up positions on the East River, while police helicopters keep watch overhead.

Traffic is blocked off on the side streets along the New York Palace Hotel on Madison Avenue where Modi is staying. Visitors to the hotel have to pass through airport-style screening by federal agents to get inside.

Modi discusses urban issues with NY mayor, health matters with Nobel laureate

Within hours of landing here, Prime Minister Narendra Modi got down to business Friday, discussing urban and anti-terrorism issues with New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and health matters with a Nobel laureate, Harold Varmus.

With both of them, he sought avenues for cooperation and looked for what can be applied from their programmes to India, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin told reporters.

In discussions on policing with de Blasio, he sought to know how the city is coping with the post-9/11 situation and what security measures the city has taken. They discussed "the common threats the cities faced" and looked for avenues of possible cooperation, Akbaruddin said.

Another point in their discussion was crowd control and how New York police managed it - although it was also noted that crowds like that at the Kumbh Mela exceeded any that New York would see.

On urban issues, they talked abut quality of life in New York and the prime minister wanted to know what are the issues that de Blasio faces because Modi wants to rejuvenate Indian cities, Akbaruddin said. Housing was an area of interest to Modi and they talked about the mayor's plans to build housing units to accommodate 500,000 people over a ten year period.

With de Blasio's keen focus on education, that was another s

ed topic of conversation. The disparities in educational facilities - which is referred to as "two cities" within a city -- came up and Modi asked the mayor about his plans to raise taxes to pay for education. De Blasio wants to raise taxes on those earning more than 500,000 US dollars per year to pay for his ambitious plan of providing free pre-kindergarten - or nursery-level classes - for all New York children to give everyone an early start in education. This was one of the planks of Democrat de Blasio's successful election campaign last year.

Modi's other guest, Varmus, is the director of the National Cancer Institute, who won the 1989 Nobel Prize for medicine for his discoveries relating to the role of genes in causing cancer. Varmus had done an internship in the 1960s at a hospital in Bareilly.

Akabaruddin said Modi invited him to visit India to promote research into cancer. And said there were possibilities for cooperation between research institutions in the two countries. They also discussed heath matters like the role of obesity and diabetes in causing cancer. Varmus, like de Blasio, complimented Modi for his actions to curb smoking.

Modi's public appearances start at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, when he goes to the 9/11 Memorial - also known as Ground Zero - which is the site of the World Trade Center that was destroyed by terrorists in September 2001. He will honor the more than 3,000 victims of the attack and visit the 9/11 Museum.

His last event for the day is a meeting with a group of "distinguished Indian Americans" that starts at 8 p.m.

In a day packed with a whirl of activities, Modi will in between the two events address the United Nations General Assembly and stage a round of neighborhood diplomacy meeting Sri Lankan President Mahenda Rajapaksa and Prime Ministers Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh and Sushil Koirala of Nepal.

Other events include a meeting with Sikhs from US and Canada and participation in the Global Citizen Festival at the Central Park.

I welcome him as our Prime Minister!!

There are over a million Indians in the NY/NJ area. Only a few dozen appear and this article assumes crowds came to see him.

A few well wishers and the rest assuming to meet him here in person rather than not meet him at all so close in person in India.

There are more pedestrians / tourists in Times square at midnight than people coming out of churchgate station during peak hours.

I hope the Prime Minister pulls the same act in middle of Mumbai and want to see the headline compared to what is up now !!

    Cheers and welcome to USA!!

Most of the indians who live in the New York Metro and the Tri-State area are North Indians with a majority of them being Gujaratis and Punjabis. This is a fact. Therefore, it is most likely that lots of Gujjus from New York and New Jersey area might have come to see Modi in person. This is same as saying most of the indians working in the Gulf are Malayalis and if CM of Kerala had to visit Gulf, the people who would meet and greet him, would be Malayalis and not Gujaratis or Punjabis.

Peter mamu is hijacking warm reception received by Modi with some other related news item. For your kind information AIDMK is not part of NDA. Both DMK & AIDMK have been royally used by Congress.

    Dear Albert, Mangalore,

    Are you a christian?!

Secondly, Jayalalitha was a coalition partner of NDA during 1999-2004. Vajpayee used her lavishly.

AIADMK was alliance partner in 1998 only. Remember Jayalalitha brought down the NDA Govt in 1998 by 1 vote (Gomang CM of Orissa of Congress party voted in LS as he had not resigned as MP yet...)

    Do not comment CRAP

Whats wrong in being a Christian and supporting BJP?? I hated BJP and supported congress out of compulsion as I had always thought BJP was communal. But since Modi has taken over as the PM, I have really started liking these guys.. I can see the vision for India in his eyes..I can see his earnest efforts to lead the country in the right direction...Christianity preaches forgiveness and love... Dont leave in the past guys..See the present and support a leader who is trying to stabilize India at the global stage... You live in India..I thought you would need be Indian first???

Dont preach Christianity here selec-tively to suit your convenience.
Christianity also preaches fairness and justice.
Christianity also preaches love for one another irrespective of one's religious affiliations.
    Christianity also preaches non-violence.
    Should I go on. . . . . .

This is nothing but creation of a cult following. People are blindly getting sucked into it. Thanks to some good media work with corporate backing.

Albert, Shetty or Declan etc. etc...are not Christians, Hindhus or Muslims... but they are all Indians. They are fortunate to live and survive in a multi-cultural country like India! unfortunately some religious minded people are real thorn to the integrity of India. They still survive because of warm nature of Indians. think what will happen to them if they are in some other countries like Pakistan, Iran or Saudi??
